THE "unprecedented" state of public sector finances has forced Basildon Borough Council to amend its financial strategy.
On Thursday evening, elected members will consider a report to cabinet which highlights the council's budgetary position and how its finances will be prioritised following Government cuts.
Councillor Stuart Sullivan, cabinet member for resources, said: "These are unprecedented times for public sector finances, and the economic outlook remains uncertain.
"However, we are more than up to the challenge and remain committed to doing the best for our local people.
"There is no getting away from the fact that central government funding for local councils has reduced and will continue to reduce in the years ahead."
Two years ago, the council received half of its funding from central government and half from council tax.
By 2015/16, it will only get around 34 per cent of funding from the Government, with the rest needing to be made up by council tax and other income.
It is predicted this situation could get even more severe.
Cllr Sullivan added: "Despite this situation, what we must do is make the required savings whilst ensuring that our budgets are used to achieve our clear aim of creating opportunity for local people and to deliver on the five promises that we have made to the community.
"There are also chances for the council to maximise new opportunities such as the new homes bonus and the changes to business rates."
