BRAINTREE Town's midfielder Nicky Symons scored what manager Alan Devonshire described as a "wonder goal" against Woking on Tuesday evening to set his side on their way to a comprehensive first away win of the season.
"It was a terrific strike and a great goal and it made it 3-1 to us," said Devonshire. "I'm pleased for Nicky too because he deserved that goal.
"He's a honest lad, has a great attitude and is always hard working for the team, but does get a bit of stick from the other lads about always trying his 30 yard plus long range shots on goal and not scoring.
"But he proved tonight he could do it and what a great goal it was and well worth being of those top goals you always see on Match of Day."
From just inside the home side's half the 27-year-old looked up and struck the ball high into the net, reminiscent of David Beckham's famous goal from the halfway line for Manchester United against Wimbledon in 1996.
Apart from being satisfied with his side's win Devonshire was also full of praise for debutant striker Dan Holman adding: "He's been on my radar for some time because I knew that he's capable of scoring goals.
"He took both in excellent style tonight and I know we can expect more form him although I don't want fans to put pressure on him.
"He's a natural goalscorer and is the ideal replacement for Ben Wright.
"It's taken us a bit of time to get him but I'm pleased he's here and also it gives us other options in our line-up."
On Tuesday's win Devonshire said: "I'm absolutely delighted with the way we played for the whole 90 minutes and overcome the disappointment of losing on Saturday.
"All the boys did well and now we move on to our next two games, at home, against Tamworth on Saturday and Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday," said Devonshire. "Tamworth will be hard because they're going well and only lost a game to Wrexham on Monday."
The only injury doubt for the Iron is striker Sean Marks who has not fully recovered from a dead leg picked up against Newport County.
Devonshire said: "I was disappointed we didn't get something out of the Newport game because we more than matched them for 70 minutes and had more chances.
"The lad then scored one of those goals a player will probably miss 99 out of a 100.
"That changed the game and we dropped our guard and allowed them to snatch a late winner.
"When we took the lead we certainly looked comfortable but they are a strong side and once they scored that unusual equaliser we found it difficult to get back into the game."
IRON skipper Kenny Davis has once again been called-up to the England C squad.
Davis is the only Braintree player to make the team that will play Belgium Under-23s on September 12 in Belgium. He is in line for a third cap.
