Youngsters at a school in Witham have been offered counselling after a 14-year-old pupil died after she was taken to hospital.

Georgia Hedges reportedly stopped breathing just before 6pm at a house in Witham last Tuesday and was taken to Broomfield Hospital by air ambulance.

After being transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, the Year 9 pupil died on Wednesday evening.

Maltings Academy schoolchildren were told of her death in a special assembly on Thursday.

In a letter sent to parents and pupils John Szynal, principal of Maltings Academy, said: "She was a popular student at the academy, well liked and respected by students and teachers.

"People are dealing with the grief in different ways and for this reason I have drafted in a group of professional counsellors to support students and staff."

An Essex Police spokesman said: "We were called to an address in Witham following a call from the ambulance service regarding an incident involving a teenage girl. Sadly the girl died in hospital on Wednesday night.

"Essex Police officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading to the death and to provide support to the family."

A post mortem examination was conducted on Thursday and an inquest will be held tomorrow.Did you know Georgia? Pay tribute below or contact the newsdesk at newsdesk@essexchronicle.co.uk
