HAVERING Mayesbrook AC's young athletes made a good start to their Sportshall Indoor season with some promising results at the first round of the Essex Athletics Network series hosted by the club at Coopers' Coborn School on Saturday.

The Under-11 girls' age group (Years 5 & 6) saw many club youngsters getting their first taste of competition.

Molly Sweetman was second fastest overall in the one lap event, with Grace Newson fifth and Charlotte Fransham sixth, while in the two lap race Grace was second overall, with Millie Hodges fourth fastest and Molly sixth.

In the field events there was victory for Millie in the vertical jump, with Molly and Grace fourth and sixth in the speed bounce and Charlotte fourth in the standing long jump.

The U11 boys' age group Max Law posted a fine series of marks, winning the speed bounce, placing second in the chest push, and standing triple jump and third in the standing long jump.

Edward Laughlin's best result was second in the speed bounce while James Adams' highlight was fifth in the chest push.

The U13 girls' (Years 7 & 8) category saw now fewer than 11 club youngsters in action.

Recent recruit Isobel McDonach produced an impressive clutch of marks edging out more experienced team mate Josie Waddams to win the two-lap race, with the pair fastest two on show, winning the shot and equal first in the speed bounce and second in the standing long jump to the club's Rochelle Constable, who was also second in the vertical jump and third in the speed bounce.

Josie Waddams was also third in the high jump, fourth in the shot and fifth in the vertical jump.

Lucy Scrutton was third in the shot and fourth in the high jump, while Isabella Purdie was fourth in the speed bounce and standing long jump, with Hollie King sixth in the latter. Isabella was also fourth in the four lap event and fifth in the two-lap race. Amelia Day, Amelia Owers, Elizabeth Adams, Maddie Reynolds and Shannon Dooley also competed.

In contrast there were just two Under 13 boys and their best results were third for Joseph Raison in the standing long jump, sixth for Oliver Morter in the speed bounce and standing triple jump.

The Under 15 age groups saw smaller line ups but the improving Matthew Owers impressed with a big win in the two lap race and victory in both the standing long and triple jumps while in the girls' events the experienced Chenice Constable had the upper hand on younger clubmate Katie Dawson.
