Essex rail commuters face 4.1% fare rise

Rail travellers will be hit in the pocket by a 4.1 per cent rise in the cost of a season ticket from next January. Regulated fares - those within the Government's control - will increase by inflation plus one per cent. The retail prices index (RPI) fell from 3.3 per cent to 3.1 per cent last month. Greater Anglia, the firm running services in and out of Essex, has yet to confirm its individual fare rises for next year. David Sidebottom, passenger director, Passenger Focus, said: "Passengers will shrug wearily at the news that regulated fares in England are set to rise, following today's announcement about the July inflation figure, next January by an average of 4.1%. "Now passengers are the main funders of the railway it is crucial that, in return for this rise, more trains arrive on time, investment in future improvements continues and the basic promises the industry make are delivered.What do you think?
