Barrister and part-time judge Constance Briscoe has been jailed for 16 months after she was convicted at the Old Bailey of perverting the course of justice. The 56-year-old, from Clapham, south London, was sentenced today after being found guilty of all three counts of perverting the course of justice by a jury yesterday (May 1). Investigations by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate found discrepancies in statements provided by Ms Briscoe to police investigating former Lib Dem minister Chris Huhne and his ex-wife Vicki Pryce for perverting the course of justice relating to a speeding offence dating back to March 2003. Evidence obtained by officers in that case showed that on both 31 May 2011 and 16 August 2012 Ms Briscoe provided Essex Police with two inaccurate statements in relation to the Huhne Pryce investigation. On October 6 2012, Ms Briscoe also gave officers a copy of her witness statement dated August 16 that had been altered from the original But she maintained it was the correct version. In November 2012, Ms Briscoe then produced another altered version of her August 16 statement which she had examined by a document expert which detectives had reason to believe had also been altered. She was subsequently charged with perverting the course of justice on Wednesday 12 June 2013. Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector John McDermott said: 'In her roles as a Recorder Judge and as a barrister, if anyone should understand the importance of preserving public justice it should be Constance Briscoe'. 'In failing to cooperate with police, she very nearly had a detrimental impact on the convictions of two other people in relation to a historic speeding offence. Had it not been for the hard work of the officers in these cases, the offenders may never have been convicted. 'The overwhelming evidence uncovered by officers meant the jury had no choice but to find Ms Briscoe guilty."
