A VEHICLE has crashed into a river in Boreham, in Chelmsford.
The accident took place on Church Road when the black Citroen Picasso crashed into the river.
The car had no occupants inside at the time of recovery, although the car was reported stolen - but only after officers were called to the incident at around 10.40am.
Police said that it was unclear how long the car had been in the river.
The police helicopter was scrambled to assist officers with the search.
A local resident at the scene, who didn't wish to be named, said: "We were concerned because there was no sign that anyone had climbed out of it.
"We were here well before them, we reported it and it took about 20 minutes before emergency services came."
Lee Woodcraft, 43, was out taking pictures at the time of the crash. He said: "I was out and came across it. Fire crews arrived within 20 minutes. I'm relieved that no-one was in it."
