Essex County Council has created an online map showing the route gritters will take over the winter, and tracking them in real time.
The red route on the map - below - shows the 1,900 miles of Essex roads which are gritted, representing 40 per cent of the county's network.
And GPS trackers fitted to each vehicle means their progress can be tracked as they make their way around.
Blue lorries are moving, green ones are stopped and yellow ones have their engines on but are not moving.
Vehicles are sometimes assigned to other duties when not needed for gritting so will appear off the red route.
