THOUSANDS of people will flock to Heybridge tomorrow to watch animal displays, check out vintage tractors and meet a clan of Vikings at the Blackwater Country Show.

Now in its ninth year, the show taking place on Sunday, (June 22), at Rook Hall, celebrates agriculture, livestock and all that is good about country life.

One of the show's four organisers, Michelle Watkinson, said: "The show was started because of our love for the countryside and the outdoors. We are all very excited for another great day at Rook Hall.

"It's always an extraordinary occasion and we try to do something different and keep the people that come here every year guessing.

"This is such a special day that is close to many people's hearts. It gets busier and better every year and we all really enjoy putting in the hard work to make the day a success."

In the nine years that the show has been running the group has donated more than £40,000 to the Essex Air Ambulance.

This year you will see vintage tractors, birds of prey soar across the sky, Newfoundland dogs carrying out 'mock' rescues on the lake, with plenty of displays and demonstrations by animals.

There will be the chance to meet 'Viking warriors' in their living encampment and under-10s can take part in the 'Kiddie-Vike' when the bravest warriors attempt to take control of the child horde.

Skilled craftsmen and local producers will exhibit original paintings, handmade tweed bags, and expertly sculpted pottery, while foodies will be delighted to see the range of meats, pickles and cupcakes, among other treats.

"There is flora and fauna, local brewers, clothing on sale and nautical wares too. There really is something for everyone," said Michelle, who works full-time for Barnardo's.

"This year one of the large marquees is dedicated to the Guild of Essex Craftsmen, where members enjoy demonstrating their high standard of skills and workmanship."

Some modern machinery will be on show, with displays showing how farming has moved through the ages.

For the first time at the festival you can enter alongside your dog to play "Flyball", a relay game for teams of up to eight people and their dogs racing against the clock.

Around the showground, little ones can stroke farm animals, meet miniature ponies, and ride on donkeys.

The event runs from 10am to 5pm and parking is free.

Tickets are available in advance from Maldon Town Tourist Information Centre, for £7.50 (adults), £3.50 (children 3-16yrs), and £18.75 (Family - two adults and two children). Tickets can also be bought on the day, for £9 (adults), £4 (children 3-16) and £23 (family).
