A woman passenger has been killed in a crash on the southbound carriageway of the M11 near Epping
Two other people who were in the vehicle have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Drivers are being advised to avoid the area as the southbound carriageway will be closed for several hours while vehicles are recovered and police carry out initial investigations.
Officers were called at about 3.30pm today, Thursday July 10, following reports of a collision involving a lorry and a car on the southbound carriageway between Junctions 7 and 6.
Traffic is being diverted using the A414 towards Chelmsford and the A12 south to the M25 junction 28.
It is likely the closure will remain in place well into the rush hour traffic.
