Essex Eagles booked a home quarter-final in the NatWest T20 Blast with a comfortable seven-wicket win at Glamorgan. It is now 10 wins in 11 games for the Eagles as they march imperiously through the South Group. Essex won the toss and decided to bowl first, the ninth time in the campaign they have chased. And although they found wickets hard to come by - taking just two in the whole innings - they managed to restrict Glamorgan to 157 in the 20 overs. The opening stand was worth 53 before Jim Allenby was caught and bowled by Ravi Bopara for 18 from 23 balls. That brought Murray Goodwin to the crease and he produced a fine innings, making 71 from 43 balls before falling to the final ball of the innings, caught by Mark Pettini off the bowling of Matt Salisbury. Jacques Rudolph was immovable at the other end, unbeaten on 60 from 54 balls, but he hit just five fours in his knock. Graham Napier was probably the pick of the bowlers with his four overs going for 21, while Bopara ended with 1-29. With a target at less than eight an over to win the game, Essex seemed intent on not wasting too much time as Pettini and Jesse Ryder got them off to a flyer. They raced to 73 in 5.4 overs before Pettini was caught by Rudolph off the bowling of Allenby fo r28 from just 14 balls, with six fours. Ryder was joined by Tom Westley and they added 20 before Ryder was the next victim, caught by Chris Cooke off Andrew Salter for a 51 which took 28 balls and including six fours and two sixes. Westley made 44 from 38 but was just unable to see his side home as Allenby struck again with only five more needed, but Bopara (32no) and Ben Foakes (1no) saw the Eagles home with two overs to spare. The Eagles face Gloucestershire on Sunday before finishing their campaign with two home games, against fellow quarter-finalists Hampshire on Tuesday and then Sussex on Friday.
