PEOPLE across Essex joined with hundreds of thousands across Britain and Europe by switching off their lights to mark the moment Britain declared war on Germany 100 years ago.
The Royal British Legion's Lights Out campaign took place to remember the hundreds of thousands of servicemen and women who lost their lives during the Great War.
It was inspired by Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey's words at the declaration of war in 1914 when he said: "The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life".
The aim was to get one million candles lit to represent the 900,000 lives lost by those defending Britain from 10pm to 11pm.
Ceremonies also took place throughout Europe and the county yesterday with many focal points at memorials in Belgium and France where the fiercest fighting took place.
Some of Britain's most iconic buildings were plunged into darkness and towns, cities and villages remembered the fallen.
Members of the public hosted their own gatherings and many tweeted pictures of their commemorations using the official Twitter #LightsOut hashtag.
