A ZOO in South Woodham Ferrers is celebrating the arrival of two of the world's smallest monkeys.

The Eastern Pygmy Marmoset twins were born at Tropical Wings earlier two-and-a-half-weeks ago and are now settling to their new surroundings.

Keeper Abbie Montgomery added: "I am very excited to be able to work with these tiny primates and the fact they have had twins is such a great bonus. They are proving so popular with our visitors and are not at all worried by all the attention they are getting."

The pair were born to proud parents Carita and Leoncito who came to the zoo earlier this year following successful breeding programmes at two other UK zoos.

John Ray, manager of the zoo, said: "We are very lucky to have had this pair arrive, settle and produce fine healthy babies in such a short period of time."

The Eastern Pygmy Marmoset is the world's smallest monkey and inhabits the South American Amazon Basin where they feed mainly on tree sap supplemented with eggs, small birds and fruit.

With a body length of only 11-15cm, less than 6 inches, and weighing only 100g these tiny creatures can easily fit in the palm of your hand.
