BRENTWOOD Town manager Steve Witherspoon had called upon his players to maintain their good FA Cup form when it came to their next league game and they duly obliged with this satisfying win at the Arena on Saturday.
Although the two goals came late on it was still a more than convincing win for Town.
But for some outstanding saves by visiting keeper Glenn Williamson the winning margin would have been much bigger but Witherspoon was more than happy with three points adding: "We were well worth our win and full credit to the players who kept playing our football, creating many goal scoring chances and we should have won by more."
Town went into this game with one point from a possible six looking for a result against a club with maximum points from their first two games in the league this season.
It took two well-taken goals from substitutes Neil Cousins and Sherwin Stanley late on to give Brentwood a well-earned win.
Blues made all the running early on and dominated the chances in the first half with Steve Butterworth creating quite a number of opportunities and Greg Cohen and Alex Read also testing Williams.
In fact, the first half man-of-the-match was probably a draw between Butterworth and Williams and the score at the break was goalless.
The second half started brightly for Town but gradually Cheshunt came more into the game and Blues' keeper Elliot Justham demonstrated that he too, was much in form.
Blues continued to threaten more than the away side but the game had all the hallmarks of an upset as Cheshunt continued to look dangerous.
With five minutes to go, the home side made a deserved breakthrough and it was a fine footballing move.
The ball was played down the left flank as Town threw everything forward and Danny Dafter played a clever ball wide to Stanley who crossed in low and hard and just outside Williams' reach for substitute Cousins to side-foot into an open net.
In time added on, the ball was played down the right flank and this time it was Cohen who played in Stanley with his back to goal and he spun and fired the ball past Williams to double the home side's lead and effectively kill the game off.
This was an entertaining game showcasing two of the better keepers in the division.
