AFTER reading's last week's Chronicle story about the Surviving Winter Appeal, Joyce Fitzer contacted the paper to find out how she could be helped.
At 91, like many other older people in our community, Mrs Fitzer finds the winter a challenge and was delighted when she saw our appeal which offers vital aid to residents struggling in the colder months.
From receiving an electric heater or a hot meal, the aid provided can really make a difference to people's lives this winter and it is down to the generosity of our readers that this appeal is such a success.
"When I saw the article I just thought it was such a nice idea," said the great-grandmother.
"I'm not one to complain but the winter can be hard for people and I think the campaign is wonderful.
"I'm very grateful I'm going to receive a warm pack and I'm thankful for all the hard work that goes into providing this."
The Chronicle-backed Surviving Winter Appeal was launched last week by the Essex Community Foundation and is supported by Age UK Essex and the British Red Cross. The appeal encourages residents to donate money or their winter fuel allowance – the sum of money given to all 60-plus residents, no matter their income to help pay winter heating bills.
Last year's appeal raised over £30,000 but this year we hope to raise closer to £50,000.
Mrs Fitzer added: "I get the top fuel allowance but I have gas, which is so dear so it doesn't go very far. The appeal is a lovely idea and I would recommend anyone who needs help to get in touch."
