Named and shamed: The Essex restaurants and food outlets with the worst hygiene ratings

The food sellers and eateries in Essex with the worst Food Standards Agency ratings have been published.

A total of 23 businesses in the county were given a zero rating by inspectors from its local authority, meaning they require 'urgent improvement'.

Outlets are scored from one to five after being judged and inspected based on three categories - food safety and hygiene - as in how the food is handled - the layout and condition of the premises, and how it manages and records how food is kept safe.

It is not a guide to food quality.
