A HEYBRIDGE man will go on trial next week charged with the rape of a woman in Mill Lane path in June last year.

Groundworker David John Heard, 26, of Elizabeth Way, is alleged to have raped a woman on the path which runs next to the River Blackwater and leads to the Tesco store and McDonald's at Fullbridge.

He will appear at Chelmsford Crown Court, in New Street, on Monday February 9 for what is expected to be a four day trial.

Heard has pleaded not guilty to the sexual assault which is alleged to have taken place under a bridge on the path.

Yesterday (February 5) police arrested a man on suspicion of a rape after an incident near the very same underpass on Saturday, January 24.

The victim, in her 20s, was set upon by two men while walking away from the supermarket between 5.45pm and 6.15pm.

The 24-year-old man from Maldon was arrested in the early hours on suspicion of rape, indecent exposure and outraging public decency.

He is currently in police custody and will be questioned regarding the assault of a woman in her 20s.

More than 1,000 people have signed a petition calling for lights and CCTV on the Mill Lane path since the second attack.
