THE people of Burnham kicked off the festive season in style on Saturday with a traditional Christmas market.
The town was transformed into a winter wonderland with a grotto and a range of specialist stalls.
From handmade gifts to festive delicacies the event had something for everyone.
Organised by the town council, the market started with a presentation by Burnham's carnival committee, who distributed a number of donations to local charities raised from this year's carnival.
Town mayor Helen Elliott said: "The event was a real success.
"We had more than 80 stalls selling everything from Christmas decorations to food and it was absolutely lovely."
As well as the shopping, guests to the market were treated to a carol service and music by Rayleigh Brass Band.
Keith Williams from Burnham, who plays the trombone in the band, said: "It was very cold but we had a nice time playing and everyone was friendly.
"We collected lots of money for a pancreatic cancer charity which was great."
The event which was held on December 1, was the first of a number of festive events around the district, including Maldon's popular shopping event on December 13.
Cllr Elliott added: "Everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves and there was a lovely atmosphere.
"The carols were lovely and it was a fantastic way to kick off the Christmas season.
"We even had a human fruit machine, which was great fun and proved a real hit with everyone.
"There was Father Christmas, of course, and all the children who visited him received a gift.
"All the presents were donated by the local Co-op, which was really generous.
"So many from the town turned out to support the event, I saw lots of my neighbours.
"It was a lovely traditional market and we lit the town Christmas tree and it even lit when it was supposed to, which was great."
