CHRISTMAS arrived early at the weekend when Santa parked his sleigh in Chelmsford High Street to launch Farleigh Hospice's annual fun run.

More than 550 bright red Santas ran through Central Park on Sunday to get into the Christmas spirit and between them raised about £20,000 in sponsorship.

The winner for the third year running was Ryan Prout, who crossed the finish line in just 16 minutes.

Ryan, of Queens Road, Chelmsford, said: "I do this event because my friend's mum, who was terminally ill, was treated by Farleigh Hospice before she died about 12 years ago.

"I joined up with a group of guys from CrossFit CM2 gym, in Chelmsford, and together we raised about £200.

"It did get a bit competitive. All of us ran individually and wanted to beat each other."

The technical account manager, who also runs for Chelmsford Athletics Club, added: "I have always been a fan of Christmas and when I was made aware of this charity, and it involved dressing up, I really wanted to do it."

The 29-year-old added: "I must admit, you do get some strange looks running through the High Street though.

"It has become an annual tradition for us now, and I will definitely be back next year."

The Santa Fun Run began in 2008 and has already raised more than £130,000 for the hospice in North Court Road, near Broomfield Hospital, which provides free care for people with life-limiting illnesses.

Father Christmases warmed up before making the 4km dash around Central Park to the sound of festive tunes.

Along with those dressed in their Santa suits there were elves, snowmen, and even dogs dressed up for the occasion.

Farleigh Hospice's PR & marketing assistant, Natalie Winger-Beeston, who attended on the day, said: "This year's Santa fun run was brilliant.

"From start to finish Christmas was well and truly in the air and the atmosphere was electric.

"We were really pleased with the amount of Santas who showed up on the day to join hundreds of others for this fun event.

"After snow earlier in the week, we couldn't have asked for better weather for the event.

"We are very grateful to this year's fantastic Santas for doing their bit to help support local families affected by life-limiting illnesses. Along with the support of a wonderful team of volunteers, we are very grateful to all the local companies and organisations that all helped to make the event a roaring success and enjoyable for everyone who took part."
