GAY Maldon businessman Barrie Drewitt-Barlow has hit out at the Government after David Cameron announced same-sex marriage will be legalised in the UK – but remain illegal in the Church of England.
Barrie, who committed himself to his love Tony in a civil partnership ceremony in 2006, has donated around £500,000 to groups lobbying for gay marriage rights.
But the father-of-five – who had been planning a church wedding with his partner – has been left disgusted after the new plans were revealed.
"I'm furious," said Barrie, 42.
"The Government seemed to make one deal that same-sex marriage would be legalised but then on the other hand they've made this second deal that means it will be illegal to get married in a church.
"I was planning my wedding and now that has been taken away from me.
"I feel I no longer face prejudice from the man in the street about being gay but it's from a higher level."
