A CHARITY that helps the people of Brentwood to stay mobile is looking for a forward-thinking chairman.
Brentwood Community Transport was launched in 2001 to improve the transport provision for those in the community who have limited mobility or who would otherwise be isolated.
The charity has a team of nine trustees and 50 volunteers who provide a lifeline service to 300 members.
But it is on the lookout for a new chairman who can bring some fresh ideas and commercial experience to the organisation.
Yvonne Chappell has stepped down from her year-long stint as chairman because she has moved away for work.
Chief executive Tina Tickner said: "Every member of our board brings a different set of skills and knowledge.
"We are looking for a new chairman who will help to make sure this service is still here in a few years' time.
"They need to be passionate about the elderly and about making a difference.
"There are people out there who are isolated and do not know we can help them. I would urge them not to sit indoors and be on their own. We can help them to regain their social life and join in with society.
"We are always looking to the future and are hoping to invest in a new bus in the new year, but that's all down to funds."
The charity offers transport five days a week to hair or hospital appointments or shopping trips, for example.
Drivers pick people up from their front doors and can accommodate those in wheelchairs.
A new route taking residents direct from Blackmore to Queens Hospital means passengers no longer have to take public transport, which involves changing buses.
Mrs Tickner said: "We're always looking for more volunteers to join us. I love what I do.
"We really see the difference the service makes to people in Brentwood."
Anyone who would like to volunteer for the charity or put their name forward for the voluntary role as chairman should contact the office on 01277 228080 or pop in to 44 High Street, Brentwood. The board meets once a month.
