VOLUNTEERS in Stanford Rivers have caught 35 speeding drivers as part of a clampdown on dangerous driving.

The Community Speed Watch scheme is a growing effort endorsed by a number of police forces around the country to cut down the number of motorists that break the limit.

Stanford Rivers Parish Council have recently become part of the scheme and are now equipped with a speed gun, they are also supported in their task by Essex Police.

A dozen volunteers have now been trained by Essex Police to use the equipment, which records a vehicle's speed and registration plate.

Volunteers have taken to the 30mph section of A113 London Road between Ongar and Abridge, which passes through Stanford Rivers.

Toot Hill will also be monitored by Speed Watch volunteers, in reply to reports of speeding problems in the area, especially on Epping Road.

Parish councillor Robert Jackson explained: "We have been monitoring the traffic over the last few weeks.

"We have given the registration numbers of 35 cars that were caught speeding through our village to the police and they will be writing to the owners.

"We plan to continue doing this for the foreseeable future and hope it raises awareness of the danger in driving too fast.

"Speeding and dangerous driving are the cause of most accidents on this road.

"In addition, a lot of cars slowed down as soon as they saw the signs and yellow jackets. Hopefully they will all be a bit more aware of the 30mph speed limit next time."

Other parish councils in the area are also said to be interested in taking part in the scheme.
