IT WAS the end of an era for Chelmsford Film Club when it presented the last showing of a film in the classic 35mm format in Chelmsford.
The landmark screening of French film The Fairy took place at the Cramphorn Theatre for the club's Christmas show.
The sturdy 35mm projector has now been packed off to Bristol as the Cramphorn Theatre moves over to digital screenings.
Jill Dimmock, chair of the film club, said: "Many of our members regret this passing of an era, as there is a strong feeling that the visual quality of 35mm prints is still superior to many digital set-ups.
"However, we have been compelled to move with the times and we are confident that our members will continue to enjoy our screenings."
The 35mm format has been the cinema industry standard for more than a century but in recent years digital projectors have taken over. It is predicted that 35mm projectors will be practically obsolete within a decade.
Chelmsford Film Club will continue to use the Cramphorn for screenings, with 11 more films to be shown as part of the current season, starting with Werner Herzog's acclaimed documentary Cave Of Forgotten Dreams on January 7.
