these kind-hearted students from a Brentwood school spent the last few days of term collecting items for the town's food bank.

All pupils at Brentwood County High were asked to bring in tins, packets and dried food and between them managed to fill 60 boxes which were collected by workers from the food bank ready to give out to needy people just before Christmas.

Each box contains enough food for a family to last three days.

Head teacher Stephen Drew said: "Christmas should be a time of joy for everyone in our community. However, we know that not everyone is able to share the warmth and good cheer that most of us are lucky enough to experience.

"The growth of food banks across the UK is a sad reality of the times we live in.

"I am immensely proud and humbled by the contributions of students, parents and staff at our school to fill 60 food boxes for Brentwood Food Bank to distribute to needy families in our local community. I hope our donations can provide a more enjoyable Christmas for some local families."
