Danny Buchan clinches national title in style at Silverstone

SUPERBIKE star Danny Buchan is revelling in his "enjoyable" year after clinching the 2014 Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship at the weekend.

The Burnham rider claimed the title in some style as he won the penultimate race of the season at Silverstone, putting him an unassailable 33 points ahead of Jason O'Halloran.

And the 21-year-old paid tribute to all the hard work that he and his team have put in over the year to secure top spot.

He said: "To be fair, I have enjoyed the whole season. A lot of people have asked me if I am relieved to have won the championship, but it's not a relief because I have enjoyed it since the start.

"It would be a relief if you were caught up in the stress of it all but I have not been stressed once.

"My team have handed me a competitive bike all year and, although it hasn't been easy, it has been a nice year.

"It was great to bring it home at Silverstone as I lost it in 2011 there, so to win it at Silverstone is a bit of a comeback.

"But it is really nice for everyone that has put in all the effort this year.

"It is nice to repay them back with the Championship.

"It is such a long season as the work really starts in January.

"I start training and the team start testing and so it is a long year, but to get that championship makes everything worthwhile."

Buchan had the chance to win the title back in September round at Donington Park, but crashed out early in the race.

But the speedster was quick to realise that he had made a mistake that day and was delighted to get the chance to put it right again.

He added: "Donington was just all wrong as my mind-set was just all wrong.

"I went there looking to win and we had the pace to that weekend but I just got it wrong.

"I didn't have to do what I did, which was go out too strong too soon, and the consequence of that was crashing out. I should have just relaxed for the opening couple of laps and taken my time.

"But I learnt from my mistake, went into Silverstone a little bit more relaxed and saying to myself that if I get it done here then it will happen.

"Luckily the pace was so good at Silverstone from the start and I just put in some consistent laps. Once I got the gap to three seconds I just kept it at that and brought it home."

Chelmsford Chieftans stay top of the table but weekend fortunes mixed

CHELMSFORD CHIEFTANS still sit on top of the NIHL Division One South table despite a mixed weekend at Riverside Ice and Leisure.

On Saturday last season's 'wooden-spoonists' Milton Keynes Thunder were the visitors and everyone expected maximum points for the champions.

Chieftains were without the in-form forward Darren Brown and James Ayling, with young Jake Sylvester brought into the side from the Warriors.

But Thunder had upset the form book at both Cardiff and Steatham and with just five minutes left they struck, Edward Knaggs scoring.

A minute later Chieftains were level as young Bailey Chittock scored unassisted to equalise the contest.

It could have been even better for the Chieftains as they thought they had won when the puck beat Thunder netminder Damien King, but it didn't beat the final buzzer and the points were shared.

On Sunday the Chieftains entertained the 'old enemy' London [formerly Romford] Raiders.

Brown and Ayling returned for the Chieftains. The defence was a player light as John Connelly was forced to sit this one out due to an injury picked up the previous evening.

The game started in typical 'local' derby manner and at 10.21 Michael Ranby put Chieftains ahead.

Raiders took advantage of two extra players on the ice, with Jakub Klima scoring a powerplay equaliser at 15.08.

Two minutes into the second period the Chieftains took the lead once again through Chittock.

The Chieftains again went a man down but kept out the Raiders before Martin Piecha scored their third.

The pressure on the Chieftains' defence increased as Czech defenceman Lukas Zatopek had to leave the ice after going head first into the boards. Chieftains again broke away to score another short-handed goal, Brown lifting the puck over Gray for 4-1 Chieftains.

Chieftains' Ryan Giles and Raisers' Ross Wilkinson were given early nights before in the final period Ross Brears finished off a well-worked goal. Turner scored two minutes later, making it 6-1, but Chieftains took their foot off the pedal and were immediately punished as Raider's forward Vaclav Drabek pulled a goal back.

However, the travelling fans were soon quietened as Chittock made it 7-2 at 52.26.

Raiders scored a consolation goal at 53.03, Steve Deacon on target, but it was too little too late and the Chieftains' fans celebrated a fine 7-3 victory.

The venue was previously 'the bar', which closed earlier this year.

Mills reveals he would love to work with Sussex coach Robinson

TYMAL MILLS has admitted he would love to work with Sussex coach Mark Robinson again.

Essex paceman is wanted by Sussex, who feel the 22-year-old will add fire to their seam attack, which is expected to be without Chris Jordan for the majority of next season.

Mills played under Robinson on the England Lions tour to Sri Lanka in February and is weighing up a move to Hove along with offers from two other counties – believed to be Lancashire and Worcestershire - having turned down a new deal to stay at Chelmsford.

He expects to make a final decision in the next fortnight once he has got over an ongoing back injury which limited his appearances for Essex last season.

Mills said: "I've spoken to a few counties with Sussex being one of them. I know Mark Robinson pretty well from working with him on the Lions tour in the winter so if the opportunity came to work with him again it would be a good thing to think about.

"But there are a few things to be sorted out before I make a decision. You've got to weigh up whether it is a good place to play cricket, what the wicket is like to bowl on and whether you are going to get opportunities to play.

"I don't want to be going to a county with ten other fast bowlers so there are lots of things to take into consideration. You've also got to decide if it's a place you want to live so it is a balancing act.

"I'm not quite over the injury yet which is delaying things too. Counties have to take that into consideration before committing to a deal which is understandable and I don't want to do anything until everything is clear.

"There is a nerve in my back which affects my left leg when I bowl but I'm confident that after a good winter I'll be fit and ready to go for the start of next season."

Mills is regarded as one of the quickest young English bowlers in the domestic game – he broke the 90mph barrier in a televised match in 2013 - and Essex wicketkeeper and captain James Foster said he was the fastest bowler he had ever kept to.

Following England horrendous 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Australia over the winter, Mills was touted for a possible call-up to the Test team as their answer to Mitchell Johnson's rapid pace.

However, his career this season has failed to take off in the way many expected and he was restricted to just six Championship and five limited overs appearances for Essex due to his back problem.

Sussex believe they can help kick-start Mills' career in the same way they did Jordan's who went from being released by Surrey to playing for England within the space of 12 months following his move to Hove.

Mills added: "I didn't do quite as well as I would have liked at Essex last season and I want to go somewhere where I can push on.

"I need a new challenge and it is the right time for me to move on. I had spoken to a few counties before the end of the season as Essex had not offered me a new deal and by the time they had I'd made up my mind to leave.

"I've never played at Hove before but I've been 12th man a couple of times so I've got a feel for the place. I went and met Robbo and he showed me around and it's a nice set up.

"One of my best mates lives in Brighton as well so I know the area pretty well. I'm just taking my time over it. It is a big decision for me as it's the first move of my career and I want to get it right."

The collision happened in Ferrers Road at around 8.50am this morning between Inchbonnie Road and Hullbridge Road in South Woodham Ferrers.

Emergency services are at the scene and the woman is being treated at the scene.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Emergency services are at the scene of a road traffic collision. It involved a young female pedestrian and a vehicle. Officers have closed Ferrers Road between Inchbonnie Road and Hullbridge Road.

Schoolgirl, 5, flown to hospital after being hit by a car in South Woodham Ferrers

A SCHOOLGIRL has been flown to hospital after being hit by a car whilst crossing Ferrers Road on her pink scooter this morning.

The five-year-old was with her father on her way to school when the accident happened at around 8.45am.

Rapid response paramedics, an ambulance, police cars and the East of England Air Ambulance rushed to the scene between Hullbridge Road and Inchbonnie Road in South Woodham Ferrers.

The youngster suffered a neck injury and was treated at the scene, before being airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

Inspector Dick Thomas investigating at the scene, said: "We believe she's a five-year-old girl on a scooter that collided with a car. We are still investigating the circumstances of it and taking accounts from witnesses.

"We believe there may have been a number of children in the area and we would like to speak to them or their parents if they have not already come forward.

"It's likely we will not know for certain exactly what happened for a few days. We're interested in speaking to witnesses that can assist with the investigation, but it is at a very early stage.

"We are not looking at the driver as a cause of the accident at the moment, but that remains under review in the light of any information that comes forward."

An Essex Air Ambulance landed in Ferrers Road and paramedics treated the girl on the roadside.

Miles Renshaw, who lives nearby, joined a group of residents to shield the girl from the wind and blowing debris as the helicopter landed.

"As the air ambulance landed in the middle of the road and a group of us shielded her from all the grit blowing around, then the paramedics from the helicopter began treating her," said the 43-year-old.

"There was a lot of people helping her, residents were directing the traffic away until the authorities got to the scene."

Forensic experts combed the scene for evidence and the road is still closed to traffic.

Essex Police would like any witnesses to the collision to come forward by contacting 101 and asking for the Roads Policing Team.

The Snappening: Thousands of users 'at risk of nude photo leak from hacked Snapchat accounts'

Millions of Snapchat users could be at risk from hackers after a threat to publish private photos and videos on 4chan on Sunday (October 12) were reportedly announced today.

Images from the alleged prospective leak, which has already been dubbed a sequel to the 'Fappening', the publication of online private snaps of high profile celebrities, are said to have been taken from the third party Snapsave Android app.

They were then reportedly posted on a false competition website was then shut down, but not before thousands of people had downloaded the images.

There are currently conflicting reports the scandal is a hoax, but it bears eerie similarities to the 'Fappening' scandal, which breached the privacy Jennifer Lawrence, Doctor Who star Matt Smith, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and Nick Hogan.

In that case, hackers were alleged to have accessed the pictures via Apple iCloud, although the company denied any security breach on its platform. That scandal has already sparked a threat of legal action in the US

A spokesman for Snapchat said: "We can confirm that Snapchat's servers were never breached and were not the source of these leaks.

"Snapchatters were victimized by their use of third-party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we expressly prohibit in our Terms of Use precisely because they compromise our users' security.

"We vigilantly monitor the App Store and Google Play for illegal third-party apps and have succeeded in getting many of these removed."

Fine for market trader Linda Bulle 'who jumped up and down making monkey noises'

A MARKET trader admitted shouting a racial slur at her neighbour following a long-running dispute over a planning application.

Linda Bulle, 67, of Rookery Lane, North Fambridge, admitted the charge of racially aggravated harassment at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Wednesday last week and was fined £294.

Her victim's husband, who did not wish to be named, told the Chronicle: "It's been antagonistic nastiness for about the last five years, and the business of the racial stuff that's been coming out is extraordinary.

"She was jumping up and down with her arms under her armpits making monkey noises. To see that first hand makes your mouth drop on the floor because you think that kind of thing left us long ago in 1970."

The court heard how on Sunday, August 17, the victim was walking her dogs past the defendant's home, when a dog belonging to Mr and Mrs Bulle began to follow her.

When the victim asked for their dog to be restrained, the prosecution allege she was told to "**** off" by Mr Bulle, before he was joined in the argument by his wife, who then shouted the racial slur, before making "ape-like gestures and noises", according to prosecutor Emma Collins, although Mrs Bulle vehemently denies the latter part of the allegation.

Indeed Mrs Bulle, who works at Chelmsford Market, said that while she regretted the use of the word, she was "bitter" about how she had been treated.

She said: "I have found the whole experience surreal; I thought 'what on earth is the world coming to?'

"I portray myself as a nice lady; I love kids, animals, and old people. I'm not a racist."

The clash between the two women followed a long-standing objection from Mrs Bulle over proposals by the victim to build an outbuilding, with Mrs Bulle being issued with a Community Resolution order as a result of a previous incident.

Defence solicitor Peter Butterfield added: "It's quite clear that there has been something of an ongoing dispute between Mr and Mrs Bulle, and the victim and her husband.

"Mrs Bulle doesn't recall the incident in very great detail, but she accepts that her husband must be correct that she used that word. Both were calling each other silly names, childish names."

The spat between the couples has even seen Mr and Mrs Bulle hire private investigators to ask questions of the couple's former neighbours – who it emerged they had had a good relationship with – and purchasing helmet cameras to record their movements locally.

Mrs Bulle, who said that she was advised to plead guilty to avoid a lengthy case at crown court, was fined £190 plus a £19 surcharge, and £85 in prosecution costs.

Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford has been forced to deny rumours it was planning to set up an emergency Ebola unit in response to growing fears over the spread of the disease in Europe.

World leaders have been vocal in their calls for more action to tackle the deadly virus, which has killed more than 3,860 people since an outbreak being traced back to March this year.

Extra screening is to take place at Heathrow and Gatwick Airport. However, Stansted has no such plans currently.

And in response to a patient claims they overheard nurses discussing the proposed unit at Broomfield Hospital, a Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust spokesman said: "There is no foundation for this."

The Ebola virus has killed more than 3,860 people since an outbreak being traced back to March this year.

The vast majority of victims lived in the west African countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Spanish nurse Teresa Romero Ramos is believed to be the only European who has contracted the disease outside of Africa.

Priti Patel set for chairman's role at Witham Town FC

WITHAM MP Priti Patel is to take on a new challenge, potentially adopting the role of chairman of Witham Town Football Club.

Although the nomination is yet to be voted on by the club, it is understood that she is currently acting as chairman-elect, and her appointment is expected to be ratified at an emergency general meeting on Monday, October 27, at the team's home ground, Village Glass Stadium.

Speaking to the Chronicle, manager Gary Kimble said: "She is chairman elect, until she gets voted in properly as chairman.

"There will be a big special meeting at the end of the month, and everyone needs to vote her in. I think it's a great appointment."

Witham Town has not had anyone in the role since July, when former chairman Tony Last died.

However, Ms Patel's office said they could not confirm the appointment, only stating that the MP visited the football club last week and she would be supporting them in her role as MP.

Following the club visit, Ms Patel said: "Witham Town had a great result at the weekend and with this strong win they are climbing up the league table. Their success is good news for Witham and I am pleased to work with them to support their vision for the future."

The 42-year-old MP will become only a handful of women in UK football to hold the position, the most well-known being the former managing director of Birmingham City FC, and current vice-chairman of West Ham, Baroness Karen Brady.

"Witham Town's footballing success is great news for our local area and they should be commended for their outstanding work coaching the next generation of footballers," said Ms Patel.

"Garry Kimble is an outstanding manager and the club has a strong vision for the future. I will work with the football club to help them secure better facilities and a sustainable future so they can build on their success."

Ms Patel has been MP for Witham since 2010, joined the Number 10 Policy Unit in 2013, and in July this year was appointed exchequer secretary to the Treasury.

Sandon School backing for X Factor Boy Band star James Graham

X FACTOR fever came to James Graham's former secondary school this week as pupils showed their support for the Bicknacre singing sensation.

The 17-year-old sailed through to the X Factor live shows last weekend after his eight-strong boy band impressed mentor Louis Walsh with a rendition of "Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake on Friday night's episode.

And this week his old school friends and teachers at The Sandon School, in Molrams Lane, Chelmsford, joined together to show their support for the former Maldon's Got Talent winner as he gears up to perform live in front of millions watching at home.

His mum Paula, 47, who works in the learning support team at the school, said: "The school has been so supportive of James from the start, everyone, the teachers, all the staff and his old school friends.

"He had a great time at this school and I know it would mean the world to him to see people gathered here cheering him on."

James lives at home with his mum, Paula, his dad Dave and his older brother Ben, 20, and has spent hours practising his singing in his bedroom when he isn't helping out in the A.T Music studio in Rettendon.

But at the moment he has been relocated to a huge X Factor house, in a secret London location, with the rest of the eight-strong boy band.

Paula told the Chronicle: "The house he is staying in is lovely, but with eight boys all in the same place it will be pretty messy and noisy.

"I do miss him but I know he's having a great time with his band mates so I don't mind."

It's been a meteoric rise to fame for the former Priory primary school pupil who won Maldon's Got Talent in 2012, and now has over 34,000 followers on his Twitter account.

And his mum Paula, of Westerings, said that James was in confident mood, and she is looking forward to heading up to London to watch him perform at the live shows.

She said: "I think the nerves are setting in but he is really excited to get started. He's a quiet boy but he knows he can sing and the rest of the band are also really talented.

"I will be nervous, and so will he, but I just said to him that room only has 700 or so people in and that he should forget about the millions watching at home.

"I just don't know who to cheer for. It will seem a bit strange cheering for him because they haven't even got a band name yet."

In the previous round of the competition James was whisked off to the island paradise of Bermuda along with his new band mates to perform to Louis Walsh and guest judge Tulisa Contostavlos.

Tulisa said on the ITV show: "Performance wise they completely gripped me, I loved it, you've got to hope the bond they have made stays that way."

With Louis adding: "You have got great chemistry and you've got a good work ethic. Boys, it's not good news it's great news."

Even though the group were only formed prior to the boot camp stage they will now perform as one of the 12 finalists in next week's live show.

James and his fellow group members Reece Bibby, 15, Tom Mann, 20, Casey Johnson, 19, Jake Sims, 19, Charlie Jones, 14, Barclay Beales, 18, and Chris Leonard, 18, will be joined by girl group Blonde Electra and four piece band Only The Young in next week's show.

The Manchester United fan and former Focus Ferrers footballer first discovered he could sing after he won a talent competition as a ten-year-old at the Priory Primary School on Bicknacre Road with a home-choreographed routine to Queen's Don't Stop Me Now.

Gooby proud of Chelmsford's second-string despite defeat

CHELMSFORD Rugby Club's director of rugby, Eddie Gooby, was proud of his team's display despite their 34-16 loss to Harrow in the London and South East Intermediate Cup.

Gooby made 14 changes for the fixture, with the upcoming league clash against Norwich next weekend in mind.

But the Blueboys boss was impressed by what he saw from a team made up of mainly second-string players.

He said: "It wasn't a hard defeat to take because the boys did so well, seeing as the opposition didn't make any changes from the week before and we made 14.

"We had a look at some youngsters and fringe players and every one of them did us proud.

"That means we know that we have players performing at a good level and if we do have any injuries then we know we have people to step in. That is what Saturday was all about."

"We were supposed to have 19 players but three dropped out on the morning of the match, so I roped in someone else who had come down just to watch. The boys played some good rugby and defended their hearts out."

Chelmsford welcome Norwich on Saturday with the teams sitting joint-top of the London Two North East after a perfect three wins from three.

But with one of those records likely to come to an end this weekend, Gooby is confident his players will be raring to go.

He added: "Norwich have got off to a brilliant start, just like we have. Hopefully my guys are rested up and ready to go this weekend and hungry to win.

"There has been a lot of banter going round from the guys that played on Saturday telling the other lads that they are after their places in the team.

"Telling them to make sure they get to training otherwise they will be there to start in front of them.

"But that is great because it shows that we have a great squad spirit and everyone is pulling in the right direction."

A perfect 11 podium finishes out of 11 for Ed Rendell

ED RENDELL made it 11 podium finishes from 11 rounds despite enduring a different kind of Motul Motostar 125GP race than he is used to at Silverstone this weekend.

The 23-year-old crashed out of qualifying in wet conditions and was forced to start the race at the back of the 33-strong grid.

But the Chelmsford rider was unperturbed by his starting position and moved through the field to finish third.

He said: "It made it a little exciting.

"We had a wet qualifying and I only managed to complete two laps that weren't timed so, because of that, I had to start at the back of the grid.

"It made it a bit interesting, but it wasn't as stressful because we had already wrapped up the championship.

"But, to be honest, I actually quite enjoyed it to come through the field.

"I'm not sure what I was expecting but I just went for it and after the first lap I was up to about ninth place."

With Rendell having already won the title, the action moves on to Brands Hatch on October 17-19.

And the speedster has a big decision to make – either choosing to stay on his current bike and going for 12 podiums, or stepping up to the more powerful Moto 3 bike as a tester for next season. He added: "It would be nice to finish on the 125cc bike and try and finish with 12 out of 12 podiums.

"Although it could be an opportunity to give the Moto 3 bike a run out to think about next year as well. I am not sure if 12 out of 12 podium finishes has ever been done.

"But we have got to decide what we want to do this week and then we will take it from there."

What time does England vs Estonia kick off on ITV?

England manager Roy Hodgson takes the side on the road in their third Euro 2016 qualifier against Estonia after declaring himself pleased with the performance against San Marino.

They are now firm favourites to qualify from Group E after a comfortable 5-0 win over the world's joint lowest ranked side at Wembley on Thursday.

England recorded more 30 efforts on goal over the 90 minutes, and they now top the group on goal difference.

Hodgson told the BBC: "In the second half our passing tempo was a bit quicker, but once you go 2-0 up and 3-0 up it gets harder for them to keep going.

"What also impressed me was the players' desire to work hard to get the ball back. If they can develop those skills then it would stand them in good stead going forward."

He expects Estonia, ranked 92nd in the world, to provide a sterner test. Unlike San Marino, the side is made up of professionals.

Estonia vs England kicks off at 5pm on Sunday, October 12. Coverage starts on ITV at 4.30pm

The Fappening 5: Doctor Who's Matt Smith and Daisy Lowe have private photos leaked

Private pictures of Doctor Who star Matt Smith and his former girlfriend Daisy Lowe have reportedly been leaked online as part of the celebrity photo hacking saga known as 'The Fappening'.

The 31-year-old actor is the second male victim, after US reality star Nick Hogan, to be targeted by hackers, who allegedly exploit a security loophole in Apple's iCloud system to release the snaps, which are then disseminated on the Reddit and 4chan message boards.

The picture reportedly shows the pair posing in a hotel bathroom before they split.

It comes only days after Jennifer Lawrence, widely believed to be the first victim of The Fappening, spoke out for the first time about the invasion of her privacy.

Yesterday, it emerged model Kelly Brook has reportedly become the latest victim of the celebrity photo hack scandal crudely dubbed The Fappening.

It was thought a previous tranche of pictures, featuring lower profile US celebrities, including Nina Dobrev and Nick Hogan, would be among the last to be published.

Previous victims, including US actress Gabrielle Union, have described the hackers as 'vultures'. Lawyer Marty Singer has threatened legal action against Google after they were not removed.

Apple has denied a security breach but has confirmed it carried out checks on its iCloud system.

Temperatures set to plummet in Essex as forecasters warn of heavy rainfall on Sunday evening

Monday morning's rush hour is set to be a miserable one for commuters in Essex if the forecast for the coming few days and weeks is accurate.

Heavy rain is predicted on Sunday evening (October 12) and into the early hours of the next day. Monday will stay wet and windy.

The changeable weather could also herald a sharp dip in temperatures as we head into November, with some forecasts of snow in some parts of the country as early as next month.

The Met Office says the rest of October in the county will remain unsettled with temperatures around normal or a little below normal with a risk or fog and mist.

The unsettled conditions are then due to continue into the early part of November.

Although forecasters at the Met Office say that it is impossible to predict seasonal and long term forecasts with any sort of accuracy, Essex County Council has already started preparations for winter.

The county's 60-strong fleet of gritters were out in force this week to test drive their routes in preparation for plummeting temperatures.

The vehicles began their pre-season checks on the busiest roads in Essex last Saturday (October 4) and will be seen again this evening (October 11).

Essex County Council's highways department, which is in charge of keeping the roads safe during cold and icy weather, also said some of the gritters will briefly be spreading salt to make sure they are working properly.
