Firefighters rescued a man stuck in the mud in St Lawrence Bay yesterday morning. The service was called and sent three engines at 7.53am after the man, in his 40s, became stuck about 100 metres from the shore at Waterside Holiday Park off Main Road. Crews freed him by 9am and he was placed in the care of the ambulance service. He was taken to Broomfield Hospital and at this stage the extent of his injuries are not known. The case mirrors that of Natasha Layley, a 14-year-old who spent two and a half hours in the mud in Hythe Quay, Maldon, when she pierced her leg on a seven-inch rusty knife last August.

Review: D'Ukes ukulele band is a foot-tapping success at Colchester Arts Centre

Twanging string and old classics remixed in a distinctly original yet foot-tapping style summed up the ukulele band D'Ukes concert at the Colchester Arts Centre on Saturday night. From the more contemporary songs of One Day Like This from Elbow to rock classic Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple, A Message To You Rudy by The Specials and Echo Beach by Martha And The Muffins, the concert had something for everyone. Behind-the-head playing by one of the group of seven delighted the assembled crowd, who were only too happy to show their appreciation by wolf-whistling and clapping at every opportunity. As a ukulele first-timer, D'Ukes certainly had intrigued from the get-go. While the electric ukulele sounded akin to an electric guitar and the acoustics in the stunning-looking Arts Centre did not help ease this feeling, the acoustic versions that could still be heard more than make up for it. D'Ukes has me hooked – and if you enjoy foot-tapping music with a modern, 'uked' up twist, they may well reel you in too.

Essex Police deputy chief constable Derek Benson has been named in the Queen's birthday honours list and awarded a Queen's Police Medal. The top officer, who joined Essex Police in 2006 following a career with the Metropolitan Police, was honoured for distinguished service to the public. Mr Benson said: "It's an honour to receive this award. "I have been lucky enough to work with so many fantastic colleagues both here in Essex and in the Met. It has been a privilege to work for two such great forces. "To receive the QPM for doing the job I love is just the icing on the cake." Mr Benson, who raises money for charity in his spare time, has most recently held responsibility of considering how the force can best cope with sweeping budget cuts. The father-of-three also likes walking his dog, playing five-a-side football and running in his spare time. Chief constable Stephen Kavanagh said: "This award is fantastic news and I would like to say huge congratulations to Derek. "He truly is dedicated to serving the people of Essex and it's great to see his hard work recognised. "Derek has been a huge support to me since I became chief constable in May last year and he is also a huge support to officers and police staff. "

World Cup 2014 Digest: Goals keep on flying in

When I was growing up (in slightly simpler times) the main thing everyone knew about South American football was that the commentators got very, very excited when they scored a goal. So it seems somewhat appropriate that now in 2014 the World Cup, back in South America for the first time since 1978, has gone absolutely goal crazy. Thirty-three goals in 10 games so far in Brazil, no draws, and only three of the teams – Cameroon, Greece and Honduras – have failed to score. And what's even better is that most of the big players have already come to the party – Neymar, Messi, Balotelli, Benzema, van Persie and Robben have all been on target. Yesterday's three games brought three goals each, but most of the chat will be about France's second – with the use of the goal-line technology causing much confusion for commentator Jonathan Pearce. In his defence, the first "judgement" when the ball had hit the post was not really needed, and you can understand the confusion. As for the rest of the game, well, France were good. Honduras were exactly as they were in their warm-up against England. In that game, they reached a point where they were fed up with kicking England and started whacking each other, but here at least they didn't reach that point – although they were lucky to finish with just the one red card. That said, it could have been a different game had Paul Pogba seen red for his kick out at Wilson Palacios in the first half. I think a former England captain's 1998 indiscretion pales into insignificance against that one, and that he was booked shows that the referee saw it and somehow deemed it not a red card offence. And sure enough, it was Pogba who won the penalty for the opener – fouled, of course, by Palacios. It was a foul, no doubt about it, but the former Manchester United man looked to me to throw himself down to the ground just to make sure. Benzema tucked that away, and then his shot led to the second, before there was no doubt whatsoever about the third, which put him joint-top of the early goalscoring chart. Then it was all eyes on the Maracana, where for some reason the commentators wanted it to be a massive deal that it was the first time Messi had played there. Argentinian fella, played all his career in Spain – is that a surprise? After being given an early helping hand by an unfortunate own goal, Argentina – the team I personally expect to win this whole shindig – got off and running, and it was that man Messi who clinched it with the second, running through and smashing in via a post. It was a good job they got that second as Vedad Ibisevic pulled one back. Bosnia-Herzegovina's World Cup debut showed promise, and with Iran and Nigeria to come, they will fancy their chances of reaching the last-16. The day's other game had another comeback, this one thanks to a late winner, as Switzerland beat Ecuador in the other game in France's group. And now we're on to Monday's action, which starts with a cracker between Germany and Portugal at the usual commuting time of 5pm, which presents the working folk with a dilemma. I may be happy with the radio coverage on my drive home, but I think it might be hard to convince the other half that I simply HAVE to watch Iran against Nigeria when I get home. But I may try and play on her lack of football knowledge to make it happen. Then at 11pm comes the other game in Group D between Ghana and the USA, again, not an easy sell, but we'll give it a go…

Police want to identify these three men in connection with a pitch invasion during Southend United's League Two play-off final second leg against Burton Albion at Roots Hall. On May 17, there was a pitch invasion after the 2-2 (aggregate 2-3) score with the majority of fans running to console the players. However, around 100 ran to the stand where the Burton Albion fans were before issuing threats. Officers have identified the majority of these people but still do not know the names of the trio above. Anyone with information on the identity of these three men is urged to contact the football investigation unit at Basildon police station on 101.

Woman who lost loved ones to cancer urges people to take part in charity record-breaking attempt.

A CONVENYANCER who has lost loved ones to cancer is urging people to take part in a charity world record attempt this Sunday in Ipswich.

Sharon Wragg, of Kerseys solicitors - which has an appointment office in Colchester - will don her tutu and fairy wings again to help raise money
for a hospital cancer ward.

The Woolverstone Wish Appeal is fundraising to help refurbish the chemotherapy outpatient clinics and day unit in the Woolverstone Wing of Ipswich Hospital.

Sharon, 45, said The March of 1,000 Fairies was a fun way to raise awareness and money for a serious cause.

Sharon said: "Unfortunately cancer touches so many of our lives in one way or other. I've lost two aunts to cancer and this year alone I've known
three people, who were only in their 40s, lose their battle against this awful illness.

"It's made me more aware than ever of how devastating cancer can be. But it is the little things, such as getting treatment in comfortable and
private surroundings, which go some way to helping make such a difficult experience more bearable.

"It's for this reason myself and Kerseys are doing all we can to help Woolverstone Wish reach its goal."

Hundreds turned out in Ipswich town centre last year for the Flutter of Fairies, which briefly broke the Guinness World Record for largest number
of people to dress up as fairies in the same place.

The record is being attempted again outside the Town Hall on Ipswich Cornhill.
And people can make donations to the charity on the day.

Sharon, whose grandmother was also diagnosed with cancer late in life but had the tumour successfully removed, said the charity was close to her
firm's heart after a colleague was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma three years ago.

Sharon, who has been the driving force behind the record attempts, said: "We hope people will come and join us on Sunday and support our fundraising
efforts. Dressing up as fairies may seem a bit silly but it's for a very worthwhile cause."

The event is again being headed by Kerseys solicitors, who have already raised over £7,000 for the appeal, in collaboration with Ipswich Borough
Council, Ipswich Arts Festival (Ip-Art) and the Woolverstone Wish. The firm has an office in The Crescent, in Colchester Business Park.

Prizes will be given out for well-dressed fairies and categories include: cutest, scariest, pinkest, most butch, most glamorous and most
unconventional.

Kerseys managing partner Anthony Wooding, who is one of the judges on the day, said: "The day promises to be a fun one and I look forward to seeing
a variety of outfits."

The charity has raised £652,570 to date and has a target of £800,000.

Chelmsford-born racer Simon Dolan admits he is stunned by his team's class victory at the Le Mans 24-hour race. Dolan's Jota team – based in Kent – were fifth overall in the famous race, and won the ultra-competitive 17-car LM P2 field, a lap ahead of their nearest rivals. Dolan joined with Harry Tincknell and Oliver Turvey in the Jota Sport Zytek Z11SN to complete 356 laps at an average speed of 125.14mph. "I can't put my feelings into words," Dolan said. "It's like I am going to wake up from an incredible dream. "I never thought it was possible to come back after our dramas with the bodywork early on. "Harry did an amazing job on his Le Mans debut – the team is stunned by his pace, consistency and maturity. Meanwhile considering Oliver's last minute call-up, he drove absolutely brilliantly for us. "I am also happy with the way I drove with no real errors. I think it is the first Le Mans that I have done where I have really enjoyed driving and that was a nice feeling to actually go out and have fun. "To finish fifth overall at Le Mans is something I'd never contemplated – I'm stunned." All three British drivers drove faultless and consistently fast laps during their stints behind the wheel of the British-built Zytek sportscar running on Dunlop tyres. The only unscheduled pit-stop occurred early in the race to repair some bodywork costing a seven-minutes. Turvey had only flown out to join the team on Thursday morning after a last minute call-up after Marc Gené, Audi Sport's "reserve" driver who had been loaned to JOTA, was recalled by the German team. Oliver had not sat in the JOTA Zytek since last September while last weekend's race was his first of the year. JOTA Sport's next race is the third round of the European Le Mans Series at the Red Bull Ring on 20 July. Dolan, Tincknell and Filipe Albuquerque (P) plus JOTA Sport are placed second in the Drivers' and Team's standings going into the four hour race in Austria.

Stansted Airport routes reviewed in bid to cut congestion

Planes flying in and out of Stansted Airport could fly less frequently and at a higher altitude above Essex, under plans to modernise London flight routes. Air traffic control bosses are currently seeking opinion on a proposal to double the amount of daytime planes departing via land east of the airport, flying over Kelvedon and Great Dunmow. In turn this would halve the number departing in the daytime to the south of the airport. The London Airspace Consultation also aims to reduce CO2 emissions and reduce the number of delays at Stansted. Images released by the airport show the proportion of flights flying up to 7,000 feet over Chelmsford and Billericay and those flying over Kelvedon. The maps show that planes flying east can reach 7,000 feet quicker. This is because when flying south over the Thames Estuary planes must travel below planes flying out of Heathrow. The consultation closes on Monday, September 8.

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen's reported move to Manchester United appears to be in doubt. Reports had claimed that personal terms were agreed between the Red Devils and the Belgium defender, but that has since been denied. And now it has emerged that the Gunners will want Portugal winger Nani in a swap deal for Vermaelen, who has fallen behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the pecking order at Emirates Stadium. Nani has been linked with the Gunners before, but signed a new five-year deal at Old Trafford last year.

Couple devastated as thieves ransack family home in Witham and steal heirlooms

A COUPLE have been left devastated by the theft of several thousand pounds' worth of gold jewellery from their home in Witham. Two men forced their way through a door of the house on Walnut Drive near Homefield Road during the early evening of June 10. Once inside, the thieves ransacked the upstairs bedrooms and stole several gold heirlooms. Investigating Officer, DC Nick Campbell, said: "The house was only empty for a few of hours, but this was enough for this thieving duo to take advantage and completely decimate the inside of this house. "They tipped over anything and everything upstairs, emptying suitcases and flinging opened drawers across rooms which damaged furniture and ornaments. "We don't know if they had been watching the property in the hours leading up to last Tuesday evening's break-in or whether this was an opportunist crime. "Regardless, this couple are completely distraught at their loss and the invasion of their privacy. "The jewellery that was stolen and those that are pictured were family heirlooms which had been handed down the generations of the families and they were looking forward to doing the same to their children later in life. "We're aware that two men were seen outside the house on that Tuesday evening. We believe they drove off in a dark hatchbacked van. "We ask people to take look at the men's descriptions, the clothing that they wore and recall whether they saw them in the area last week." The men are described as white, but tanned and aged in their 30s, one man has dark-brown curly hair which was gelled back with a wave in it and is fat. He was wearing a black T-shirt which had white writing on the shoulders and the back. The second man was wearing dark shorts, a short-sleeved yellow high-visibility jacket and large sunglasses. He has his dark hair gelled and spiky at the front. "These jewellery items may be offered for sale to people in the coming days in unusual circumstances so we ask jewellers and the general public alike to be alert and contact us." added DC Campbell. A forensic examination of the house was carried out, with house-to-house enquiries also completed. Anyone with information in connection with this burglary is urged to contact detectives at Braintree police station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

A FAMILY of travellers has been ordered to leave Freeport Braintree shopping centre days after parking their caravans on its grounds. Five caravans, and some trucks and small lorries pitched up on Friday (June 13) and remained on the site over the weekend. Braintree District Council, Essex Police and Freeport security visited the group on that afternoon at around 3pm and police say the situation is being monitored. The group says it is all one family that have been moved around by various authorities around the county. "We just want somewhere we can call home, we keep getting moved from place to place, but we just need out own bit of land," said a member of the Smith family. "We don't leave rubbish everywhere, we keep it nice and clean and tidy, the people that live near the last place we were actually came and thanked us for leaving it so clean. "All we need is somewhere to live, the council need to find us somewhere permanent to go. "The police and council have not treated us fairly wherever we've been. "A lot of permanent traveller sites don't accept vans or lorries, but this is our living, we need them to survive." A spokesman for Freeport said they were aware of the camp and had served 24-hour eviction notices to the travellers.

Three people in Chelmsford were taken to hospital on the night of England's World Cup opener against Italy. A field tent was set up in the High Street on Saturday (June 14) before the game and into the early hours of Sunday and staffed by paramedics and volunteers from the East of England Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance. In total, 22 people were seen to by the team on the night - with the aim was to help reduce 999 calls and the pressure on Broomfield Hospital's A&E. Sandra Chick, assistant general manager for Mid-Essex, said: "We provided a similar resource in the high street on New Year's Eve and, due to the World Cup being screened in licensed premises and the expected increase in demand, we thought it would be a good idea to try it again. "I would like to thank all the staff involved including St John Ambulance volunteers who also assisted us in providing first aid and medical support." Depending on how far England goes in the World Cup stages, the tent may be used again for a night-time weekend fixture.

Essex GP3 star Alex Lynn is hoping that Michael Schumacher is on the road to recovery after coming out of a coma. The seven-time world champion has come out of the medically-induced coma he has been in since a skiing accident in December. And Lynn, who is preparing for this weekend's GP3 event at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, hopes the prognosis is good for the German legend. "I hope for the best for him," he said. "He's been my hero since I started watching Formula 1, I just hope he can make the best recovery possible. "To see him out of hospital is great and I hope it's really good news. " Lynn won his first race in Barcelona last month, and is now hoping for more success in Austria. Lynn drives for the Carlin team in GP3, but is part of the Red Bull Racing team, so the race is particularly important for him. "It's a big race," he said. "Certainly I think it adds more pressure but I think it'll be really cool and I really want to win for the Red Bull family, I think that would be something special."

Essex Police have issued an appeal for witnesses following a large brawl near Rowhedge village hall on Saturday evening. The disturbance took place on June 14 after the villages annual regatta at around 6pm in the village hall car park on Rectory Road. Officers received reports that there were around 100 youths fighting and attended the scene to restore order. Three arrests were made with two police officers injured during the incident. One suffered damage to his shin after being kicked and the other received hand injuries. Officers have now also received information that a 16-year old boy, who lives in Rowhedge, suffered a broken wrist during the incident. Ds Nick Eliot, of Colchester CID, said: "This incident happened following the local annual regatta at Rowhedge . A large number of young people had gathered in the field and were consuming alcohol. "Another incident took place just before where some young men were seen fighting near the basketball court. "One of them received a broken wrist." "We believe people may have filmed the incident on their mobile phones or taken photos. I would urge anyone that does have any footage to get in touch with officers at Colchester CID. We are carrying out house to house enquiries in the local area." Chief Inspector Richard Phillibrown, District Commander for Colchester, said: "This is a one off incident and I would urge local residents not to be concerned. "We will be working with the organisers of the event to put some measures in place to try and reduce the risk of this happening in the future." World Cup 2014 Digest: Bore draw was an absolute stinker

$

It may have taken 13 games, but Iran and Nigeria certainly made sure that when the first draw of Brazil 2014 came it was an absolute stinker. Having thought that it might be a hard sell to get in on the TV at home, I was surprised to see that it was already on when I arrived home last night. By half-time, I was disappointed it had been on and was quite happy to give it up for, well, anything else that was on. I still kept an eye on the game via Twitter, but it's safe to say I didn't miss a lot. The knock-on effect of it is that, as many expected, Group F will be the most cut and dried one by the looks of things, and Bosnia-Herzegovina could well be on course for a spot in the last 16 on their World Cup debut. The main group of day five though, was Group G. And the first game of it was billed as a potential cracker. What we got was a one-sided horror show for Portugal, who were thrashed, had well-known madman Pepe sent off and lost two key players to injury. Germany are predicted to go a long way, but they will face harder tests than Portugal on that sort of form. Thomas Muller got the ball rolling from the spot, and things were already looking bleak when Mats Hummels made it 2-0 with a thumping header. Then enter Pepe. He's got plenty of previous, and after catching Muller with a flailing arm, he added another moment of madness to his rap sheet by leaning over the German forward and headbutting him while on the floor, leaving the referee with no choice but to flash his red card. Muller made it three with a goal that at first looked like bad defending and terrible goalkeeper, but after seeing a couple of replays was upgraded to good forward play and terrible goalkeeping. Portugal should have had a penalty and did technically have a goal disallowed in the second half – both incidents which will have had the poor sap who needed them to lose and score to win £25,000 feeling aggrieved – but Muller took the early lead in the race for the Golden Boot with his third. That made the late game between Ghana and the USA a big one, with the two knowing a winner is in good shape to get into the last 16 and a probable tie against the runners-up of Group H. And it was the US who took advantage, Clint Dempsey's brilliant individual strike putting them ahead in the very first minute. Andre Ayew levelled late on, but John Brooks headed home to win it and put the US in pole position. Group H finally gets underway today with Belgium, Algeria, Russia and South Korea taking their first steps on the Brazil stage. Quirkily Brazil and Mexico's second game falls in between the two, meaning the Russians and South Koreans will not have kicked a ball in anger by the time Group A could be virtually decided. Mexico is another banana skin for the hosts, who were helped by the referee in their opener against Croatia, while the visitors will hope for better luck with the officials themselves after having two goals chalked off in their win over Cameroon. Hulk is likely to miss out for the hosts, with Ramires or Willian set to step in in Fortaleza.
