'Similarities' between murder of Hijab-wearing woman in Greenstead, Colchester, and James Attfield

The woman who was knifed to death on the Greenstead estate in Colchester yesterday may have been targeted because she was wearing a hijab.

Detectives have also said there are "immediate similarities" between her death and that of James Attfield, who was stabbed more than 100 times in Castle Park earlier this year.

Officers now want to hear from anyone who used the Salary Brook Trail between 8.30am and 11am and are at the location this morning speaking to any members of the public in the area who normally use the pathway.

Detective Superintendent Tracy Hawkings said: "We have not yet been able to formally identify the victim but we believe we know who she is and specially trained family liaison officers are speaking with her family now.

"We urgently need to speak to anyone who saw a woman in her early 30s walking through the Greenstead estate yesterday morning.

"She is believed to have left her home in Woodrow Way and then made her way down across Avon Way onto the Salary Brook Trail. It is possible she may have got onto the trail at one of several entrances on Avon Way towards St Andrews Avenue.

"At the time she was wearing a dark navy blue full length robe, called an Abaya, and a patterned multi-coloured headscarf, known as a Hijab. She also had with her a black bag, with orange panels, which she was carrying on a shoulder strap.

"If anyone saw her or was in this area yesterday morning we would ask them to call us."

Detectives would also like residents to check their gardens and rubbish bins for any discarded weapons or blood stained clothing.

They are asking for anyone who has CCTV footage which covers any part of the Greenstead estate between Woodrow Way and the Salary Brook Trail to make contact with them so that it can be viewed.

Det Supt Hawkings said: "A forensic post-mortem is due to be carried out this afternoon to establish the cause of death but at this time it would appear that a knife or other bladed weapon was used in this attack.

"The victim also suffered facial injuries but the cause of these has yet to be established.

"We have no further detail on the murder weapon or weapons at this time but if anyone comes across any suspicious items which they think could be connected to this murder we would ask them to call us."

Det Supt Hawkings said the investigation team were keeping an open mind about the motive for the attack and at this time it did not appear that anything had been stolen from the victim.

"There are some immediate similarities between this murder and that of James Attfield but there are also a large number of differences as well," she said.

"There is no current known motive for this attack and we are keeping an open mind and exploring all possible avenues of investigation.

"We are also conscious that the dress of the victim will have identified her as likely being a Muslim and this is one of the main lines of the investigation but again there is no firm evidence at this time that she was targeted because of her religion."

Police will be carrying out additional reassurance patrols in the Greenstead area while the investigation continues.

One man currently remains in custody and is being questioned by detectives after being arrested in connection with this investigation yesterday evening.

Detective Superintendent Hawkings added: "We are obviously as concerned as the rest of the community about this murder.

"Officers will be carrying out additional patrols and we will be dedicating all of our available resources to trying to find the person or persons responsible.

"Someone in Colchester must have information or suspicions about someone who may be responsible for this horrific crime. We would urge them to get in touch as soon as possible so that we can progress our investigation."

Anyone with any information that could assist the enquiry is asked to contact the Major Investigation Team on 01245 282103, Essex Police on 101 or they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Greater Anglia apology after Chelmsford delays cause rush hour chaos

GREATER Anglia has apologised after commuters endured delays of more than three hours due to overhead wire problems at Chelmsford. Travellers were stuck on trains between London and Shenfield from around 4.30pm, after overhead wire damage caused a train to fail at Chelmsford. The delays caused one of the two tracks to be blocked between Ingatestone and Hatfield Peverel while the faulty train was eventually recovered at around 7.15pm. Greater Anglia's managing director Jamie Burles said: "I would like to apologise for the delays and cancellations that affected our Mainline services throughout the evening. "These were caused by an overhead power line problem between Chelmsford and Hatfield Peverel which resulted in a train failing, blocking one of the two lines. "Whilst we aimed to provide alternative services wherever possible, the reduced line capacity did unfortunately result in lengthy delays for many customers. "We will be holding a full investigation into the incident with Network Rail as part of our follow-up to help avoid any repeat of this problem and the widespread disruption caused." One commuter, John Taylor who was trying to get back to Braintree, said "I was at Liverpool Street for 90 minutes and they had not explained what the problem was. "I went to get some dinner and thought that when I came back everything would be hunky dory, but alas. "When I got back there was an announcement that there was a train to Chelmsford, we got on that." But the train came to a stop just outside Shenfield. "We were overtaken by about seven trains on the inside and we were told that there was congestion on the platform at Shenfield. It was all BS. "The train was packed to the rafters and it was not very comfortable – that's why I got off. I thought I would cut my losses. "The bottom line is that things go wrong – but it's the fact that you're kept in the dark. The few staff they have at any station, they soon disappear when there's a problem. "They seem to go underground. It was very poorly handled." The long delays continued until the end of service at around 2am.

Former Chelmsford City chairman rues Dean Holdsworth 'disappointment'

Departing Chelmsford City chairman Mansell Wallace has admitted that the Dean Holdsworth reign was the biggest disappointment of his time at the helm. Holdsworth was appointed last summer as the man to replace long-serving boss Glenn Pennyfather, but left the club in November after a disappointing reign which left the Clarets fighting relegation, having previously reached the play-offs in four of the previous five seasons. The former Premier League striker's tenure simply did not work out, and Wallace admits he was let down by the man he appointed. "I think that was my greatest disappointment in my time at Chelmsford," he told the Chronicle. "Dean didn't do what he said he was going to do. "He let us all down very badly, without a lot of soul-searching from the board I think the club would have been in very dire circumstances. "Unfortunately we were all led to believe he was the man who would do it for us but he didn't." Holdsworth's time came to an end after a 6-0 home defeat to Boreham Wood, a game which ended with a number of angry fans shouting abuse at the manager and Wallace admitted he had to take some of the flak as well. "You can't do right for being wrong sometimes," he said. "A couple of times under Dean Holdsworth there was a lot of shouting from the fans. "After the loss to Boreham Wood he took a lot of flak and I took it with him, people said I should go inside but I said I would let them have a go at me because at least they went away happy. "You don't want them to go away angry. I stood there and took it because it comes with the job as I also took the glory when we won against Colchester."

Dappy 'was told to suck your dead dad' before alleged assault at Chicagos in Chelmsford

RAPPER and former N-Dubz star Dappy was provoked into slapping a Chelmsford teenager at Chicago's nightclub after he told the celebrity to "suck your dead dad", a court has heard. Chelmsford Magistrates' Court was told today (June 18) George Chittock directed a series of comments at the singer and ex-Celebrity Big Brother housemate throughout the evening of February 27. Prosecutor Jacqueline Carey said Dappy, 27, real name Costadinos Contostavlos, then slapped ex-Hylands School student Mr Chittock, unprovoked, as the night's proceedings were dying down. "The crown says that it's clear that he had no need and honest belief to try and defend himself," said Ms Carey. Giving evidence, Mr Chittock said he did not speak to Dappy through the course of the evening, and did not even know or care that he was performing. "I am not a fan or follower of him and I couldn't care what has gone on in his life," he said. Mr Chittock claimed Dappy slapped him with an open palm to his left check, causing swelling. Giving evidence, Mr Chittock said he arrived at Chicago's at about 10.30pm with about five friends and went on to drink two pints of lager and a jägerbomb. Defending, Jon Harrison claimed George Chittock had provoked the star with comments throughout the evening. Mr Harrison said: "You went to see him again for a third time because you wanted to be threatening. "You made it clear you were no friend or fan of the defendant and you made it clear to him that you wanted to make it seem that you were not scared of him or the security guard because you know them. "Did you think this would be a good story for your friend? Did you think that it would be good fun to tell a tale that you got started on by Dappy? "That's what I'm going to suggest. That he slapped you to get you out of the way." The court heard Dappy attended a Wednesday student night in Chicago's to first perform and then meet fans in the VIP area. CCTV footage shown to the court showed the incident, but also appears to show Mr Chittock staring and muttering comments to Dappy. Defence lawyer Mr Harrison claimed Mr Chittock taunted Dappy as he entered the club, saying: "Dappy you are a mug I am going to knock you out." A photo posted on Twitter back in February, shown to the court, also shows Mr Chittock and Dappy standing face-to-face with one another in the VIP area. Mr Harrison said to Mr Chittock: "You are saying 'do you remember me pussy?" He added that on the third occasion the two crossed paths, in the nightclub smoking area, Dappy slapped Mr Chittock out of self-defence, fearing he would attack him after Chittock made the comment about his father. Yet when asked if Chittock said that, he said: 'I would not say that, I have close family members who have died and that is not right.' Throughout much of Chittock's evidence Dappy sniggered sitting beside his lawyer, while comedian and Dappy's friend Jim Davidson also sat at the back of the room. Dappy denies one count of assault by beating in connection with the incident. The trial continues

ESSEX is leading the way in the economic recovery, according to Prime Minister David Cameron. At Prime Minister's Question time earlier today Mr Cameron said: "Where Essex leads the rest of the country follows". This was in response to a question from Witham MP Priti Patel on the economy and the falling unemployment rate in the county. The PM used Essex as a example of the Coalition's economic policies pay-off and as a justification for a continued austerity programme.

Paul Grayson reveals "harsh words" after Essex thrashing

$

Paul Grayson admits Essex were disappointing in their record defeat to Hampshire – but hopes it is just an "accident". Essex were thrashed by 470 runs – their largest ever Championship defeat by runs – at the Ageas Bowl after twice being bowled out for less than 140 on a pitch where James Vince on his own scored 240. Grayson admitted the loss led to some "harsh words" in the dressing room, but is determined to make sure it is just a one off. "I just hope it's an accident," he said. "It was a really poor performance from day one. They got too many runs and too many extras on a pitch that offered plenty. "But there's no excuses for that performance, there were a few harsh words in the dressing room afterwards from one or two people and now we want a positive response when we play Gloucester in ten days' time. "You can talk as long as you want in the dressing room about areas to improve on but it's about putting it into action and I'm expecting a response in our next Championship match. "It was a really disappointing performance with bat and ball, we were completely outplayed. It was a big game against a team that was above us and for one reason or another we just didn't perform." After Friday night's T20 game with Middlesex at Chelmsford, Essex have a week off after a busy period, and Grayson thinks the rest will do his team a lot of good. "I think it's a good thing," he added. "We looked a bit tired this week. I'd never give the players any excuses but we have had a big schedule over the last three weeks with travelling and playing so I think we need a bit of time away from the game. "We've obviously got a big game on Friday night against Middlesex in the T20, and then it'll be a case of some of the boys getting some time off and resting their bodies a bit for another busy period." Essex's injury list has dissipated in recent weeks, with Graham Napier the only notable injury absentee at the moment. And that makes the slump on the south coast all the harder to take for Essex's head coach. "I think the most disappointing thing about the result was that bar a couple of players we were back to full strength," he added. "In the last few weeks when we've been really struggling for numbers we've found a way of getting into games, but the fact here is that everyone was probably available who we wanted to pick and that made it more disappointing to be honest. "You can't beat yourself up too much because county matches come thick and fast, you have to learn very quickly and move on to the next game."

A man has appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court in connection with a fire which caused 16 flats in Heybridge to be evacuated. Daniel Grant Hilton, 29, of Wood Road, Heybridge, has been charged with arson with intent or reckless as to whether life was endangered, criminal damage to property valued under £5000, and assault by beating on his partner, Lucy Cavanagh. The fire left three flats in the three storey block uninhabitable with powerless residents having to find an alternative place to stay while watching the inferno destroyed the flat. The dwellings contained nine people inside including six adults and three children. A joint police and fire investigation will be carried out in due course to establish the cause of the fire. Chelmsford City will not be making an immediate appointment as they look for a new chairman. An emergency board meeting was held on Wednesday night, and the club remain hopeful that the role of chairman can be filled by an external candidate. A statement said: "The board have decided that there will be no immediate appointment for the role of chairman. "It is hoped that this vacancy, and the role of HR and Legal Director, can be filled externally. "This will be discussed at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 23rd June 2014 and therefore the Board urge all Football Club members to attend the AGM for an honest and open debate."

Thieving postman Graham King was reported by wife's ex-boyfriend after stealing 42,000 packages

A POSTMAN who stole more than 40,000 letters, bank statements and birthday cards and hid them in his shed has been jailed for 16 months.

Graham King, 47, formerly of Easterford Road, Kelvedon, admitted four counts of stealing the post over a seven-year period up until November last year when he was reported by his ex-wife's new boyfriend.

Recorder David Altaras told King at Chelmsford Crown Court on Tuesday (June 17): "You consistently stole mail addressed to members of the public and estimated their worth.

"It is clear that you went out of your way to steal items you considered to be of value. It constitutes a gross breach of trust and to a large extent is inexplicable. It is regrettable that the court must send you to prison."

King was given a six month sentence for three counts of theft of unaddressed mail, but for a fourth charge, regarding 6,539 addressed letters, he was handed a 16-month jail term to run concurrently.

King, who recently moved to Lowestoft, began working for the Royal Mail in the Braintree sorting office in 2002, and began to steal postal packets in 2006.

His offending was first discovered last year when his ex-wife's new partner, Nigel Ore, was searching for camping equipment in the loft where King used to live in Hanningfield Way, Colchester, and found three undelivered letters.

When Mr Ore told King about the mail he "nonchalantly" picked them up from the house.

After Mr Ore informed the authorities, investigations by the Royal Mail began in November 2013 and King was searched and a voucher was found in his left hand trouser pocket.

When interviewed by police King admitted taking the voucher from a magazine that was of little financial value and that he took from another postal worker's route.

Later a search of his home uncovered 35,538 unaddressed postal packets and 6,539 pieces of undelivered addressed post packets.

Warrick Tadford, prosecuting for the Royal Mail said: "Unaddressed mail is a considerable amount of Royal Mail business and if it is not delivered has a serious effect on their business.

"This postman stole a very large amount of items that covered the full spectrum, including bank statements and birthday cards, plus other letters not of particular importance.

"One item has been singled out which is a gift voucher sent just before Christmas by special delivery worth £30.

"Postmen are in a different position to other employees as if they steal their actions affect customers and damage the integrity of the whole system."

Lorna Glover, defending King, told the court: "He has cooperated fully in terms of searches of his home and person. This was not a very sophisticated operation. It was a more random scooping up of mail, which was almost hoarded at the home address.

"His offending began after the relationship breakdown in 2004, until then he valued his job and was in a stable family. After 2004 he was at a level of distress. He was unable to sensibly manage and it expressed itself in this behaviour. He wasn't seeking large financial gain, more the thrill of what he could get away with. To this day he cannot say why he did what he did."

THIS straw police officer and his 'minions' are proving an unlikely deterrent to speeding motorists.

The fake Bobbie and his Despicable Me animated film characters are keeping a watchful eye on drivers passing through Ford End, two weeks following the village's scarecrow festival.

One of the organisers Andrew Brown said: "Cars come steaming into the village and see what looks a policeman hiding behind this sign and immediately slam on their brakes.

"On the day of the festival the average was 22mph with people slowing to look."

About 400 visitors to the scarecrow festival raised more than £1,400 for future work to be carried out at the village hall.

Playboy aviator Claude Grahame-White rocked the park long before the Boys Toys event thanks to his firm friendship with fellow yachtsman Sir Daniel Gooch who owned Hylands House Estate at the time. Grahame-White was a roaring twenties combination of the Great Gatsby – Scott Fitzgerald's fictional magnate of the same era – and Virgin Airline boss, entrepreneur and adventurer Richard Branson. Sir Daniel offered his estate's church at Widford and the lawn of the fabulous mansion for Grahame-White's glitzy marriage to New York socialite Dorothy Caldwell Taylor. The story of their high society wedding has fascinated former Hylands' staffer and one-time city road safety chief Doug Killick, who staged an exhibition at the house two years ago to commemorate the event's centenary. Doug said: "Grahame-White was the equivalent of a film star full of glamour and daring in his day. "He was flying just five years after the Wright brothers and was the first pilot to do so in the dark. "In fact he was so anxious to learn to fly in 1909 that he would not wait for his trainer to arrive at the Bleriot school in France. "He took off but did not realise the plane was tethered to a fence and that took off too but luckily with no dire consequences." By 1911, Grahame-White had learned to fly competently and had founded his own aviation company at what is now RAF Hendon aircraft museum. He had by then earned a playboy reputation for taking wealthy young American women for flights at $100 a minute, worth the equivalent of $2,000 today. While in the States picking up huge flying prizes of more than $1.5 million in today's money, he even landed one of his planes outside the White House in Washington DC. Then Grahame-White took a cruise on the Titanic's sister ship Olympic where he had a whirlwind romance with the beautiful slender Dorothy. Her father assigned $12 million to Grahame-White as the marriage settlement and they took the chance to marry at Hylands with aircraft at the very heart of the huge occasion, attracting tens of thousands of people over two days. Lady Gooch decided to have her summer fete on the day before the marriage with a flying circus as the big attraction led by Essex flyer, Benny Hucks, the first man in England to fly upside down and to loop the loop. Thousands took advantage of special cheap third class GER rail tickets to pour into the well-publicised fete. The weather was "not favourable" said the Chronicle at the time and Grahame-White was stuck at Harlow because of high winds. The rest of the fliers could not even leave Hendon. But the expectant thousands hung on all day until at 7pm Sir Daniel received telephone messages that the planes were on their way at last. The Essex Chronicle wrote: "His thrilling arrival relieved all the disappointment of a long and weary vigil and when the light faded he even flew by searchlight, enchanting spectators." The next day five planes were set to land on the lawn at Hylands. Hundreds lined the streets to Widford Church in expectation, not for the bride, but for the air show. The marriage is the subject of an early news clip at www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/533 The happy couple both loved flying although their love for each waned and they divorced within four years. But this was not before Lord Northcliffe, the newspaper magnate paid for a sky-blue aircraft with gold-plated struts for the glamorous couple to visit 121 English towns in 1912, promoting flight and the warning "Wake Up England" to expose German war preparations. In 1911 Grahame-White established a flying school at Hendon, which quickly became Hendon Aerodrome. Hendon Aerodrome later became RAF Hendon but after flying ceased there in the 1960s it was largely redeveloped as a housing estate named Grahame Park in tribute to Grahame-White. Mr Killick said: "Although he had put it about a bit before he was married, White wanted to settle and have children but Dorothy would have none of it. "After the divorce she had a marriage of convenience with an Italian Count with no money. She got the title Contessa Di Frasso and no ties. He got the cash he needed." She became the "Countess of Hollywood", a gossip columnist's dream with sexual liaisons with George Raft, the actor-gangster; Gary Cooper, the High Noon Star; and Bugsy Segal, the career mobster who was assassinated in 1947. Her Champagne lifestyle ended on New Year's Eve 1954 when, shortly after partying with German sex-symbol Marlene Dietrich in Las Vegas, she was found dead on the train heading for Los Angeles. She was 64. Grahame-White continued his love of aviation with his new wife, music hall star Ethel Levey. The Levey marriage lasted until 1939 by which time, after a clash with the government over compensation for the Great War use of Hendon, Grahame-White dropped flying and concentrated on real estate in the US and UK. His fortune grew again and he eventually moved to Nice in his old age, where he died in 1959, aged 79. His third and last marriage was to English chorus girl Phoebe Lee, who outlived him, dying in 1964 and leaving their substantial fortune to the RAF Hendon Museum. Mr Killick said: "It's a fascinating tale and the fabulous wealth of Dorothy's family continues. "Her relative, the late Bertrand Taylor, a D-Day veteran involved in the New York Stock Exchange, came to Hylands by chance about four years ago. "I explained everything I knew and he invited us to dinner. "He said my wife and I should meet him and his wife at Liverpool Street. "We were taken to the Ritz. We had a private dining room and a waiter each. It was sumptuous. "At the end he suddenly said 'Oh I forgot the tip' and counted out £200. "The meal must have cost a small fortune in my terms but it seemed like pocket money to him. "Like Grahame-White and Dorothy Taylor he inhabited a different world from the rest of us."

A team of hardy hikers at a Braintree construction company is set to scale the heady heights of the three peaks to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital. The 15-strong group, at Tamdown High Rise, started its quest to conquer the 24.5 peak hills in Yorkshire on May 31, beating their 12 hour target by 90 minutes. Next on the agenda is the national Three Peaks Challenge, which will take place on June 26 - with 26 miles that must be completed in 24 hours. First they will tackle Ben Nevis, Fort William, Scotland, before a six hour drive takes them to Scarfell Pike in the Lake District. They will then take the four hour drive to climb to Snowdon, north Wales. The Tamdown High Rise team has been training in their spare time since February. Managing director Andy Parton, said: "The team have put in a lot of hours for this challenge, but it's all worth while for this fantastic cause.
