THOUSANDS of women donned pink T-shirts, hats and costumes to run around Hylands Park and raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Similar events happen around the country and are a chance for women to join forces to support each other and loved ones who many have passed away form the disease.

See more pictures and a video from the event here

"The day went really, really well, I'm delighted with the level of support we have had," said Gill Burgess, event manager.

"There was a little bit of rain but certainly didn't diminish anything, it's been a fabulous day and we couldn't have done it without the hundreds of volunteers that helped out, especially the Chelmsford Army Cadets, they have been absolutely amazing.

The amount of people taking part in the 10k, as opposed to the shorter 5k run, had increased on last year.

Organisers expect to have raised £323,000 once the final fundraising efforts have been counted up with just over 4,500 women of all ages taking part.

"Perhaps people are looking for that extra challenge, people all have different reasons why they are here and when you hear the backstories it's clear it means a lot to everybody," Mrs Burgess added.

"It's a totally empowering event, with real support and it a massive celebration of hope and inspiration.

"Well done to everyone who took part, it's a wonderful achievement and it's been an awesome day."

There will be one more Race for Life event in Essex this year, in Epping on July 16.

Place are still available so visit www.raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org to get involved.

New home for Chelmsford Community Church after 37 years

A CHURCH group finally has a home of its own after 37 years of using other venues thanks to a remarkable donation drive and a whole lot of praying.

Around 160 people packed out Chelmsford Community Church in Trent Road on Sunday (June 29) to sing and praise in jubilation.

The congregation has previously flitted between school halls, a theatre and other churches to hold services.

Only two months ago, the dilapidated building was at threat of being converted to houses, before Chelmsford City Council officers had a change of heart.

"This is another quantum leap," said pastor Peter Balls.

"It's fantastic, and the number of people who have come in saying how happy they are it's being used by the community thinking it would be houses, is just fantastic.

"The relationship already with the neighbours is really good."

Peter, who joined the church about 15 years ago, said they could not afford the building when it became available in March.

But one Sunday that month he appealed to the congregation for funding and was met with a "phenomenal" response.

"Four years ago we were on the verge of closing down. We didn't have enough money in the bank to keep it going," said the father-of-two.

"We would wake up at night with our hearts thumping and we just had to pray and pray.

"I asked for pledges one Sunday and that week funds would go up and up. It was something like £90,000 in a week

"The United Reformed Church in New London Road gave us £500 because they just like what we're doing and we got two to three thousand pounds from people we've never met.

"It made your hairs stick up on the back of your arm."

The church bought the site for about £200,000, spending another £50,000 in refurbishing it between May and June this year.

They now hope to offer midweek coffee mornings and start a choir later this year.

Member of 34 years Jan Hewett, who found out about the church via the Chronicle, said having a permanent home was "absolutely fantastic".

"The church has survived this long because the church is about people, it's not about whether we're in a building," said the 57-year-old mother-of-two from Sixth Avenue.

The Mayor of Chelmsford Bob Villa, who attended the service, said: "I'm very impressed and I'm very pleased for them. I only heard today that it came on the market in February and here we are in June, they have funded it all themselves without going over budget and secured a big loan and decorated it in three months.

"What an achievement."

Don't rely on sat-nav to get round Tour De France road closures, motorists told

Drivers travelling through Essex have been urged not to rely on sat-nav while road closures are in place for one of the world's biggest sporting events today.

The third stage of the Tour de France cycle race from Cambridge to London will attract millions of TV viewers and thousands of

spectators along the route through Essex.

More than 200 of the world's leading riders will race through the county for about two hours on Monday afternoon entering Essex near Saffron Walden before moving into London near Woodford Green.

Road closures have been controlled by Essex County Council and full details of roads affected and closure times can be found at www.letouressex.com

Police officers have been preparing for the event and working with numerous partner agencies since the race organisers announced the route in January 2013.

Extensive plans are in place to maintain the safety of riders, spectators and residents, to reduce and detect crime, crowd control and to prevent any breach of the peace.

Supt Adrian Coombs said : "It is important that all drivers are aware of the race route and the closures.

"Try to avoid the affected areas completely but if your journeys are essential allow more time and use alternative routes.

"If you are driving through the county do not rely on your sat navs. Look at the route on a map and set the sat nav to take you through unaffected areas.

"We are also urging spectators to stay off the road as the riders and the following convoy approach as there have been incidents on the Yorkshire stages where people have been much too close.

"Some of the cyclists have expressed concerns about the potential danger to themselves and to spectators.

"The weather looks set for a great day and we hope people plan ahead, stay safe and look after their property, especially those riding to vantage points on expensive bikes."

Officers will also be on duty in areas where the largest crowds are expected such as in Saffron Walden, Finchingfield, Rayne, villages to the east of Chelmsford and Epping.

A special operation room has been set up at Police HQ and officers are working closely with partner agencies throughout race day to deal with any problems as they arise.

Essex star Mark Pettini delighted by teamwork

ESSEX batsman Mark Pettini believes that every member of the side are ready to step up and perform when required. The Eagles have enjoyed great success in the T20 Blast competition this season, currently topping the South Group with eight wins from nine games. The 30-year-old said: "The thing is that someone different is putting their hand up each week to win the game. Obviously it was Tendo (Ryan ten Doeschate) this week and then the bowlers as a unit have consistently put in great performances." Pettini struck 42 from 29 balls in Friday nights five-wicket win against Surrey, but highlighted the performance of spinner Tim Phillips. The left-armer took the vital wicket of Kevin Pietersen for one, having previously bowled a maiden to the international star. Pettini said: "He is an unsung hero at times and particularly tonight. Kevin (Pietersen) can be destructive on his day and when you are at a small ground you think that this guy could win the game very easily for them. To restrict him to that maiden and then get the wicket was a huge moment in the game." This is an ethos echoed by teammate Matt Salisbury, who stated that nothing but the best is asked of them by skipper ten Doeschate. Salisbury added: "Ryan always talks about everyone potentially being a match-winner, so everyone needs to put in full commitment every game and one moment can turn the game. So every player has the potential to win the game for us."

Chelmsford City manager Mark Hawkes has paid tribute to departing chairman Mansell Wallace. Wallace brought Hawkes over from Heybridge Swifts in November as the Clarets avoided Conference South relegation. But with the shock news of Wallace's resignation last month, Hawkes is sad to see his employer leave. He said: "It is a shame that Mansell has had to step down. I will ever be in his debt for giving me the chance to be manager at such a wonderful club like Chelmsford City." The Clarets are expected to appoint a new chairman soon after advertising the position, but Hawkes has stated that he is keeping himself away from the decision. He added: "The choice is nothing that I have been involved. My first port of call is the director of football and he conveys our conversation to the board. We will just have to wait and see what happens to the club."

Chelmsford City have confirmed the signing of Sutton United's Lee Sawyer on loan until November 8. The 24-year-old started his career at Chelsea and was on the bench for their final game of the 2006/07 season. The midfielder has also played for league clubs Southend United, Barnet and Coventry City. The Clarets' manager Mark Hawkes said: "I am very excited about the prospects of working with Lee. You don't often get the opportunity of having a player at 24, who has been on the substitute's bench at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho. He has played league games for Coventry, Barnet and Southend. "He has got a lot of experience, and you don't often get the chance for our level to have somebody like that involved. I think our management style looks to get the best out of players, and if we can get the best out of Lee Sawyer then we will have a very good footballer at Chelmsford City."

EXCITED spectators turned up in their thousands in Felsted to witness Tour De France cyclists negotiate a notorious bend on Chelmsford Road. The village, which has recently celebrated the 450th anniversary of Felsted School with a visit from the Queen, was even more packed for Le Tour's visit. Community spirit was truly at the core of Felsted's Tour De France coverage as local volunteers rallied to help with a beer festival and hog roast. The onlookers leant out of windows, sat on rooftops and even created makeshift balconies out of scaffolding in order to get the best view. As children from Felsted school had broken up for the holidays, there were plenty of activities lined up including a bouncy castle, climbing wall and refreshments laid out by the local vicar Colin Taylor and his parishioners. Headmaster of Felsted School, Dr Mike Walker, said: "The thought of such a huge event to come not only into England, but to your village was truly a privilege. "The Felsted Village Committee should be applauded for creating a family atmosphere that captured the spirit of the race."

THE medieval village of Rayne came alive with the buzz of Tour de France excitement as the world's best cyclists sped through its scenic countryside.

A café with food stalls and make-shift bars were set up outside the Rayne Village Hall as hundreds sat on the grass and watched the bikes as they raced through the rest of Essex.

"It was excellent, well-organised, it's been great, with lots of things going on around the area. It's a good thing for the village and the county," said Russ Bartlett, 44, from Great Notley, who was there with his family.
