THREE suspected thieves stole hundreds of pounds worth of alcohol from a Braintree shop.

Police want to identify three men who were caught on camera at the time that £600 worth of alcohol was stolen from Sainsburys in Tofts Walk in Braintree between 12.30pm and 12.40pm on Thursday July 17.

All three suspects were seen to gather in the aisle before one of them selected items from the shelves and placed them in bags in his shopping trolley and then left without making an attempt to pay.

Investigating officer, PC Chris Gould, said: "Only one of the men walked out with the alcohol but all three appear to have been together before the theft took place."

The man who took the alcohol is described as being of South European appearance, in his late 30s.

He was at least 5ft 11in tall and was wearing a lilac shirt with dark blue tie, black trousers and black shoes.

One of the other suspects is described as a white man, at least 5ft 11in tall, with a round face. He was wearing sunglasses, a dark blue t-shirt, dark blue three quarter length trousers and light blue trainers.

The other suspect is also of South European appearance, at least 5ft 11in tall, with a skinny face. He was wearing a white shirt, black trousers with a black belt and black shoes.

Police are asking anyone who recognises any of the people from the CCTV images to call PC Chris Gould at Braintree Police Station on 101 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Can you pinpoint the moment when Chelmsford started to become as crowded as many believe it is now? The answer lies in the mid 1960s, according to the short clip below, which shows an almost unrecognisable town centre. The video, uploaded to YouTube by 'Pastfilms' shows a town centre starting to be dominated by cars - but buses still had a key role. The clip also reveals Colchester was home to a flourishing new bus service, including gleaming new Routemasters. And the taster below offers a brief glimpse of a busy Chelmsford, also in the 1960s.Does this spark any memories? Register and share them below.

A PENSIONER has donated all her gardening equipment to a project for young people who have been made homeless.

Diana McNee, 81, who lives in Witham, donated garden furniture, plants, equipment and money to the scheme to encourage the 16 to 25 year olds that live in Bramble Court to take an interest in horticulture.

As a thank you the tenants at the sheltered housing hostel in Bramble Road cooked a barbecue and presented Mrs McNee with a bunch of flowers.

Bramble Court manager Claire Baker said: "The day went really well, everyone really enjoyed it, there was lovely sunshine all day as well so it was great.

"Mrs McNee heard about the garden project for next year and she wanted to donate equipment as she cannot manage her garden herself anymore.

"We wanted to say a big thank you to her and so the tenants cooked her a barbecue and we dedicated a rose tree called Lovely Lady to her."

The hostel is run by Family Mosaic and helps to house young people that have suffered family breakdowns and have become homeless.

Currently 25 youngsters take part in the gardening project and the team intends to enter Witham In Bloom next year.

STARGAZERS across Essex have joined with millions around the world to watch a "supermoon" light up the night sky.

The dramatic lunar event also included glimpses of the Perseid meteor shower leave a dust trail from the Swift-Tuttle comet as the Earth passed through the comet tail, causing light flashes to be seen overhead.

A supermoon is when the moon reaches the point in its orbit closest to the Earth, known as "perigee", andappears 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than normal.

Every 133 years, comet Swift-Tuttle swings through the inner Solar System leaving behind a trail of dust.

When the Earth passes through, the dust cloud particles hit the atmosphere at 140,000 mph and burn up in streaking flashes of light, creating the spectacle known as the Perseids, that will be visible until Wednesday, but peaking on Tuesday.

If you missed the supermoon, don't worry, the next event will be on September 9.

Frustration for Devonshire as Braintree lose at Macclesfield

BRAINTREE Town manager Alan Devonshire had frustration written all over his face as his side lost their seasonal opener 1-0 at Macclesfield on Saturday. Having seen his side control most of the game but they failed to find the net, leaving the Iron long journey home without picking up at least a point which they deserved. "I'm gutted because we looked the better side but in all honesty we didn't play well," he said. "For a start we didn't create enough but overall we didn't do ourselves any justice and I'll have to get that sorted out for our next home games. I told the players afterwards I was disappointed with their all round display. "We started well, gave away what was clearly an offside goal in the first place, came back into it but really in the second we simply ran out of ideas which is disappointing," he added. "The subs coming on didn't make the impact I expected and we just have to do better. "Defensively we were good as we were all last season," he added. "But will get it sorted out for the next games." It was also hardly the right preparation for the game for the Iron players as the team coach only arrived at the ground with 25 minutes to go to kick off because of severe delays on the motorway. "Yes, it didn't help us but that's no excuse for our below par display - I expect more from the team and the game was there to be won," he added. The Iron, starting with only one new signing in the line-up - French defender Remy Clerima, replacing the departed Dean Wells - looked solid enough at the back all afternoon and they always looked the more threatening side going forward but failed in the final quarter. But it was a regular problem for the Iron showing lots of effort and hard work but not enough penetration and lacking that little bit of quality with their finishing when it mattered. The Iron had started cautiously with Sean Marks left up front as the one striker but they still created occasionally from midfield and while goal scoring chances were few and far between they did have opportunities with Marks, Chez Issac, James Mulley and Kenny Davis with possible chances. It was much against the run of play when the home side took the lead on 15 minutes courtesy of a free-kick swung into the Iron area where defensive hesitation allowed Chris Holroyd to slide the ball into the net with a left-footed shot. The second half was much the same with the Iron pushing forward and looking to score but they just failed with their final ball into the danger area in what in reality was a poor match at this level. Devonshire threw caution to the win on the hour after which he brought on three strikers - Michael Bakare (for Dan Sparkes 61), Dan Walker (for Issac 79) and Jordan Cox (for Marks 62) - and they each battled hard for the equaliser but again that lack of finese and quality in the final quarter was the problem. Defensively the Iron were good value so much so that keeper Nik Hamann had little to do all afternoon apart from picking the ball out of his net for what turned out to be the only goal of the game. Braintree Town: Hamann; Peters, Clerima, Massey, Habergham; Issac, Davis, Paine, Sparkes; Mulley, Marks, Unused subs: Brundle, Pentney. Attendance: 1,309. Iron host Dover Athletic in their first home game on Tuesday, kick off 7 45pm and they will be without utility player Matt Paine. "Yes, sadly he's going to be out for a while - it was really a bad tackle but amazingly the referee didn't even give a foul," added Devonshire.

Chelmsford City suffer opening day defeat to Gosport Borough

CHELMSFORD City suffered an opening day 1-0 defeat to Gosport Borough courtesy of a controversial penalty. Just past the half hour mark, referee Ian Cooper awarded the visitors a spot-kick for an apparent shove by Mark Haines on Matthew Patterson to the stunned silence of the home crowd. Justin Bennett slotted the penalty past Nicky Eyre comfortably and in the aftermath of the goal, manager Mark Hawkes was sent to the stand for comments made to the referee's assistant on the near side. The incident had the Clarets rattled but the home side got through to half time and after the introduction of Joe Ward Chelmsford put the Hampshire side under severe pressure in search of an equaliser. Nathan Ashmore saved twice in a minute - first from Luke Callander and then from Ward from the resulting corner - before the home side were given a lifeline when Rory Williams saw red for a second bookable offence. But Chelmsford were unable to make their extra man count as Ward saw his close range effort desperately cleared off the line, and both Michael Cheek and Sam Gregory were unable to find the target late on. So after a promising pre-season campaign the league season began with a bump for Hawkes' side, although they can consider themselves extremely unfortunate to have not come away with at least a point. The game began with all the hallmarks of a cagey league opener, sprinkled with a few tough but fair tackles from both sides early on. Overall Gosport arguably shaded the opening quarter of the game, without having to unduly trouble Eyre in the City goal. Only a long range effort from Steve Ramsey forced Eyre into action diving to his right, with the visitors also having Sam Pearce and Daniel Wooden sending attempts off target. But just after the half hour mark the blue-touch paper was lit as the referee awarded Gosport a controversial penalty to the surprise of a stunned crowd at Melbourne Stadium. The penalty was awarded for a shove on Patterson by Haines with Ian Cooper pointing to the spot. Bennett duly accepted the opportunity, striking low to Eyre's right to give the visitors the lead. In the aftermath of the incident, manager Mark Hawkes was sent to the stand for his response to the penalty decision which on the whole unsettled the Clarets side. With the home side clearly rattled Gosport created couple of chances to put daylight between the two teams with Thomas Dunford having the best of them scuffing an effort wide from a corner. Having gotten in at half time with no further damage, Chelmsford sent on Joe Ward 10 minutes into the half which added a different dimension to the home side's attacks. Ward's direct running was putting the Gosport back line under pressure as the hosts went in search of an equaliser. Gosport can have their goalkeeper, Nathan Ashmore, to thank for keeping their side in front as he made two smart saves in the space of 60 seconds midway through the half. The first save came at his near post after Luke Callander had manufactured some space in the area to get his shot away. From the resulting corner, Glen Southam's out-swinger found Ward who lashed a volley low and hard only to be saved by the feet of Ashmore. Chelmsford were beginning the turn the screw with Gosport failing to apply any pressure of their own on Eyre's goal, and Michael Cheek was next in line try his luck but failed to hit the target after the pull back from Lee Sawyer was played agonisingly behind the striker. With just over 10 minutes of normal time remaining, the Clarets were awarded a lifeline as Gosport's Rory Williams was shown a second yellow card for a cynical challenge on Ward. But with the extra man the home side were unable to capitalise despite creating two glorious chances towards the end of the game. Ward will wonder how on earth his effort from inside the six yard box did not cross the line after the ball fell to him at the near post. The young striker lashed the ball towards goal expecting the net to bulge only for it to be cleared. And deep into stoppage time another substitute, Sam Gregory, found himself through on goal with only Ashmore to beat, but Gregory skied his half-volley high over the cross bar as the 10-men of Gosport held on.

Witham earn point against Lewes on Ryman Premier opening day

WITHAM Town got their Ryman Premier season up and running after a 1-1 draw with Lewes at Spa Road. Lewis Godbold's late equaliser cancelled earned Witham the point, after Luke Blewden had put the visitors ahead. It was a a good result for Witham on their introduction to the higher level. They started jittery but as the game progressed improved and in the end could have nicked all three points. Lewes forced many corners from the start and Witham goalkeeper Martyn Guest made a couple of early saves from Fraser Logan and Nick Wheeler who went very close to scoring. Just before half time Lewes stopper Rikki Banks, made a crucial save from Ryan Blackman. Lewes took the lead in the 68th minute when after a breakaway Luke Blewden was left unmarked and shot fiercely into the net. However, Witham were soon level when Lewis Godbold headed a corner in, one of the many corners taken by Tom Wraight. And he almost got a winner after good work by Josh Mayhew, making his debut for Witham, but the ball was gathered by Banks in a goalmouth scramble.

Burnham Ramblers suffer heavy defeat to Romford

BURNHAM Ramblers got off to the worst possible Ryman One North start as they were beaten 4-0 by Romford on Saturday. A devastating three-goal burst in the first sixteen minutes set Romford up for the victory against Bertie Brayley's Burnham. Burnham's best chance of the match came in the opening moments when they found themselves clean through, but brave goalkeeping and defending from Aaron Omand and Scott Truman cleared the danger. Romford then got things together and after 11 minutes Reece Tranter beat the full back down the right touchline and Ryan Imbert rushed into the goalmouth to head home his perfect cross. Three minutes later Imbert arrived at almost the same spot again to side foot into the net after another good cross from the right, this time by Tom Richardson. Romford were now rampant and it was only another two minutes before Jack Barry's fierce shot was stopped by a Burnham hand on the line just inside the post and Paul Clayton stepped up to smash home the penalty although it was a mystery why the ref did not issue a red card. On 28 minutes a Burnham shot flew not too far over but after that it was all Romford up to the interval. Jack Barry broke into the box and seemed to be denied another penalty when he was pulled down, before on 42 minutes a great shot from Abs Seymour from the corner of the penalty box crashed into the opposite side of the goal off the crossbar. Romford started the second half as they had ended the first, piling the pressure onto the Ramblers' goal and any hopes the visitors had of a comeback was snuffed out when Nobbs received his marching orders for two yellow cards in seven minutes.

Opening day defeat for Heybridge Swifts at Soham Town Rangers

HEYBRIDGE Swifts suffered an opening day Ryman One North defeat as they were beaten at Soham Town Rangers 3-1 on Saturday. Ricky Spriggs levelled for Swifts, but the hosts breached the defence three times, leaving Swifts frustrated that the performance didn't match some in pre season. Soham took a 17th minute lead when Joey Abbs broke through and beat Danny Sambridge in the box. But the lead only lasted two minutes as Liam Springett whipped over a free kick from the left for Heybridge, which Soham keeper Templeman failed to hold. Spriggs then capitalised from close range to make no mistake with the leveller. The first half remained quite even but Heybridge did have to survive a couple of further first half scares as Abbs sent over a cross on 26 minutes that sneaked through the defence before George Artemi cleared before Ryan Sharman had chance to shoot. Luke Stanley was the danger man all day long for Soham and should have scored just after the half hour when he met a Hall cross at the edge of the six yard box but put his effort narrowly wide. Stanley again went close on 38 minutes but this time the legs of Swifts keeper Sambridge denied glory, Springett backed him up with a big clearance that went skyward, Sambridge remained alert as the ball descended onto the roof of his net for a corner. Heybridge had noticed the Soham keeper could potentially be a weakness in his holding onto the ball in the opening half and caused a goalmouth mini scramble just before the break as Jordan Gent grappled to clear from on the ground, Richmond saw his shot blocked just feet from the line by the valiant defender before Hunt side footed wide from the rebound. A goal just before the break can hurt any side and did so to Heybridge as Soham regained the lead on 43 minutes, Luke Stanley broke clear from a free kick and was able to guide the ball past Sambridge with ease as Soham took a 2-1 lead into the break. 2-1 was so nearly 3-1 inside two minutes of the restart as a 35 yarder from Marcus Hall curled inches over. Tom Holdstock rose highest to win a 61st minute header, which needed an acrobatic save from Templeman to keep out the ball as Heybridge showed again they were capable of scoring. But it was in defence they wobbled and a minute later Soham sub Dan Brown skipped through the middle past Steve Good and Springett and continued into the box. He attempted to round the keeper but Sambridge held firm and made a crucial save, as he also did on 64 minutes when he got down to deny a long range effort from Abbs and the follow up by Sharman. Nine minutes from time, Jack Barham who had come on for Springett for Heybridge ended a long run with a shot that Soham blocked, Billy Hunt turned the rebound straight at Joe Templeman as both teams began to tire. All hope of a comeback began to fade in the final six minutes when Dan Brown again beat Good, Sambridge saved and Sub Matt Simpson scooped the ball over from close range in dismay. Soham sealed the three points in stoppage time when Joey Abbs netted again.

Late own-goal deny Maldon and Tiptree victory

MALDON and Tiptree played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Cheshunt on Saturday to kick off their Ryman One North campaign with a point. Allen Bossman quickly cancelled out Jack Stevenson's opener for the Jammers before Joe Pearson restored the lead. But just eight minutes from time a Tommy Spillane own-goal meant the points were shared between the two sides. The first half produced little excitement or goal mouth action, with the visitors concentrating on defending deep and pumping long high balls up to their front men. The home side were finding progress hard themselves with their lone striker, Leon McKenzie, often left isolated up front surrounded by visiting defenders. The home side made a strong start to the second half and scored their first goal after 52 minutes when Stevenson gained possession from Pearman's head down and shuffled across the edge of the penalty area before firing home with a fine shot into the corner. Any hopes of maintaining the Jammers lead were quickly dispelled just three minutes later when Cheshunt's Bossman went through to easily steer the ball past the advancing Jack Giddens. Maldon took the lead again after 59 when Pearman volleyed McKenzie's ball across the area spectacularly into the roof of the net. But the visitors then pushed more men forward and started to create some danger to the home side, which culminated after 82 minutes with a bizarre own goal by Maldon's Spillane. He got in a tangle dealing with a ball across his own goal area and he only succeeded in pushing his attempted clearance into his own net.

Chelmsford unable to grab win as Wanstead hold on for draw

CHELMSFORD cricket club first eleven were held to a draw by Wanstead on Saturday as they were unable to grab the final two wickets. Having posted 226 at Wanstead, the visitors then reduced the hosts to 131-8, but Joe Ellis-Grewal and Misem Ali Syed-Zaidi batted out for the draw. Dan Hagen's innings of 86 was the cornerstone of Chelmsford's 226, with Miles Clark (39) and Nick Prowting (36) also in good form. Usman Sahar (4-71) and Mohammed Fayyaz (5-45) the pick of the bowlers for the hosts. Ben Clifford (2-29) removed both openers and good spells from Sam Cook (3-38), Stuart Everard (2-24) and Tom Craddock took the home side out of the game. Stout resistance from Ellis-Grewall (20*) and Sahar (25) held Chelmsford off and they could only pick up eight wickets. In a top of the table clash at Chelmer Park, Chelmsford second eleven came out on top gaining the winning wicket with a ball to spare. Rob Hayto was the hero with a half-century and five wickets including the last two. Gary Chidley also contributed a half-century as Chelmsford posted 225. Mahesh Velani (43) gave Wanstead & Snaresbrook a great start and Feroze Khushi (98) played superbly to keep them in the game as partners steadily came and went. Trying to get another bonus point and his century proved Khushi's downfall and the last man could only last two balls to spark wild celebrations. The third team had what looked like a fairly routine win over in Shenfield. In fact, the visitors had been 100 without loss before Keith Goodman (4-58) induced a collapse and Tom Arnold (5-21) smashed through the lower order. Pratt (59) and Savill (40) had given Shenfield a good start. David Thrift (45) and Brad Green (35) looked in splendid form before perishing to loose shots but Chelmsford passed the target for the loss of four wickets. Despite that their lead at the top was cut as nearest rivals Upminster had a maximum points win.
