A-level results: Boswells School pupils passes six A-levels

BOSWELLS School was "delighted" with this year's results, including those of one pupil who managed to pass six A-levels.

Ellen Battye, of Springfield, scored an A* in chemistry, As in maths, further maths and physics, B in biology and a D in general studies.

Although she smashed Sheffield University's A, A, A, requirements to do medicine, she wasn't confident leading up to results day.

"I didn't check until half eight, I kept putting it off and doing other things first.

"I went into the study to check and I couldn't believe it at first.

"I said to my mum: 'Did I get in?' and I sent pictures to my friends asking: 'Does that mean I got in?'

"The A* really surprised me and biology, I thought I was going to do rubbish in that.

"I had always thought about the results over the summer and now I'm really excited about university.

"Not particularly about going up north, but meeting new people, moving on, and being independent.

"I think I'm going into town later, just being with my friends.

"I still can't believe it."

Bethany Lodge, who lives in Springfield, is off to the University of Greenwich to study law thanks to an A* in philosophy and ethics, and Bs in law, sociology and general studies.

"I cried when I found out I got in," she said. "I jumped out of bed and ran to my mum's room and she cried. I told my grandma and my grandad and they cried."

Bethany found out she had been accepted by a text message from the university at 7am.

"I couldn't really sleep and looked at my phone after I went to the toilet and there was this message from them.

"I'm over the moon, I never thought I would get that at all.

"I'll still be away from home but close enough to come back.

"I'm really excited about going to the city, there's so much going on there, I can't wait to start."

Overall, the school had 99.3 per cent of entries graded A* to E, 55.8 per cent A* to B and 27 subjects achieving a 100 per cent pass rate.

Headteacher David Crowe, who is retiring from the school, said: "I shall miss the people and students, especially on days like these.

"It's exciting and rewarding to see that our students' hard work has resulted in such high grades.

"The support provided by their teachers and other staff has played a large part in students' success."

Revellers have been warned not to show up with drugs at the V Festival in Hylands Park tomorrow after 16 people were arrested today (August 15) after allegedly trying to take drugs onto the site.

A force spokesman said a number of those detained on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug were teenagers

They are being dealt with by officers at Hylands Park and will be barred from the festivities.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Maleary said: "The people we have arrested are mostly under the age of 18. They were arrested as part of the routine stop checks and searches that officers are carrying out at the entrance sites.

"My message to anyone thinking of taking drugs to the event is a simple one – don't. You will be caught. You won't be allowed into the festival and you will face police action."

Anyone who experiences crime at the festival is asked to contact Essex Police at the mobile police station or call 101 or 999.

Who is taking the Broomfield Hospital wheelchairs? Patients accused of taking them home

$

PATIENTS want wheelchair services reorganised at Broomfield Hospital, amid rumours that people are stealing them.

The hospital is buying more wheelchairs to boost its fleet of 50 and has pleaded with patients who already own a chair to "bring it with them".

James Leadbeater, 70, of Lynmouth Avenue, Chelmsford, says he waited 40 minutes for a wheelchair last month while attending for an X-ray on his broken leg.

His wife searched the car park top-to-bottom to no avail, while receptionists failed to locate a porter to dig one out for him.

On the point of cancelling his appointment and going home, one was eventually found by a fellow visitor to the hospital.

"It was just the annoyance of going through the process of having to find a wheelchair, but it's probably the public's fault more than anything else," said Mr Leadbeater.

"Someone did say quietly, 'we can have as many bedpans as we like but not wheelchairs'.

"The main problem is clearly that people are just not returning wheelchairs from where they borrowed them and a lot of patients wheel themselves outside for a cigarette.

"Some wheelchairs are clearly going home."

Anne White, who for 14 years has been the secretary of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association Chelmsford and Mid Essex branch, thinks a wheelchair hub should be placed on each floor of the hospital's multi-storey car park.

"It's important for patients to have wheelchairs available because the thing is it's quite difficult for someone to make their way to the atrium if the wheelchairs are kept inside the atrium," said the 66-year-old, whose husband has MND.

"I think there could be a hub a bit nearer, so the driver of the car could get out and take it from there and bring it back for mum, or whoever.

"Even if it was 50p or a pound to make sure they took them back, like you do with a trolley at the supermarket."

The trust confirmed it was buying extra wheelchairs, but did not blame patients for the shortage.

A spokesman said: "The hospital has more than 50 wheelchairs available for patient and visitor use on the Broomfield site and is in the process of purchasing more.

"From time to time, during busy periods, we appreciate that there can be high demand for a wheelchair.

"We would advise anyone requiring a wheelchair and who is able to use their own when visiting the hospital to please bring it with them."

A MAYLAND mum donned a decorated bra while walking a marathon through the streets of New York to help a breast cancer charity.

Lucy Cummins, who works at Tesco in Maldon, took part in her 12th MoonWalk marathon on July 26 with Walk the Walk, which raises money to help treat breast cancer.

It took Lucy just over six hours to complete the marathon in 72 degree F heat, with all participants asked to complete the race in specially-designed bras – Lucy's had both London and New York taxis on it.

Lucy said: "The New York marathon has been a dream for many years and to fulfil it with a charity close to my heart and with Andy and Fraser supporting me with the charity on the night made it extra special."

Her husband Andy has been a volunteer at the London MoonWalk for the past three years. He and son Fraser, 15, were volunteers for Walk the Walk in New York and were able to wave Lucy off at 10.30pm.

She had previously completed a London MoonWalk yearly since 2006 and two Edinburgh MoonWalks in 2011 and 2012.

V FESTIVAL: East of England Ambulance service warns festivalgoers to stay safe after rise in injuries

THE East of England Ambulance service is encouraging festivalgoers to look after themselves this weekend.

The ambulance service is warning people attending V festival to take care after they saw a rise in the number of patients at last year's event.

Around 550 people were treated by the service at V festival 2013, suffering from of a variety of ailments, including broken ankles, chest pain and over indulgence of alcohol with the majority treated at the scene and only 30 requiring hospital care.

Senior Locality Manager Sandra Chick said: "After a rise in calls last year it highlights the need for people to look after themselves so that they can have a fantastic time.

"No-one wants to see their weekend end in a trip in an ambulance, so we're urging people to behave sensibly and not over-indulge.

"One of the simplest things many forget is just to keep hydrated by drinking enough water.

"We're also suggesting people heading to the festival go prepared: take both sun cream and extra clothing as you can never predict what the weather will be, and if you have a pre-existing medical condition ensure you have enough medication with you to last you the weekend."

East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust will be on site at the festival 24 hours a day across the whole weekend in case of emergency, as will St John's Ambulance volunteers.

An investigation is under way after a man was found dead following the discovery of a container of people at Tilbury Docks. The container, on a ship from Zeebrugge, was being unloaded this morning (August 16). Essex Police said they received a call at 7.35am from the Port of Tilbury authorities. Thirty-one people, including adults and children of both genders, were found inside and the majority are being treated at Basildon Hospital. A spokesman denied rumours the A&E had been closed but admitted the incident would have an effect on waiting times this morning. Essex Police is working in partnership with the Port of Tilbury, UK Border Force and the East of England Ambulance Service. A casualty bureau is in the process of being set up.

V FESTIVAL: Spend a penny in luxury as Chelmsford charity J's Hospice provides sweet smelling loos

FESTIVALGOERS can spend a penny in luxury at J's Hospice's impeccably clean toilets – all for a £1 donation to the charity.

Smelly portable loos that are in such a state most would rather find a bush to answer the call of nature is part and parcel of most music festivals.

Then there are the arduous queues, and for those that dare enter the cubicles, there's always the risk that there will be no toilet roll either.

But the Chelmsford-based J's Hospice will put an end to the darker side of V festival with their very own sweet-smelling loos, which will be cleaned and disinfected regularly, stocked to the ceiling with toilet roll, and complete with air freshener and hand-sanitising gel.

Maz Keenan, events fundraiser, said: "The J's Hospice are over the moon to be invited to attend the V festival at Hylands Park for the 5thyear running."

"The J's and our very dedicated volunteers from Cunningtons Solicitors are all looking forward to a busy weekend of cup collecting and maintaining four toilets which are a bargain at only £1 a visit.

"We do get plenty of regular visitors, excuse the pun, and all donations are donated directly to The J's Hospice, making abigdifference to a small local charity."

To find the toilets, look out for the J's Hospice logo on the festival site or check their Facebook page during the weekend at facebook.com/TheJsHospice for detailed directions.

The J's Hospice provide hospice care, respite and support to young adults, aged 16-40 with life limiting conditions and life threatening illnesses across Essex.

THE gates have opened, the roadies are warming up the stage and the welly-clad revellers are flocking into Hylands Park in their thousands.

The biggest and 18th annual music event in Essex, V Festival, is back.

As of this morning, just before The Rifles take to the main stage, the grounds are still quiet and attendees can walk into the arena uncrowded.

Yet as the bigger names take to the four stages, the remainder of the expected 75,000 guests, 10,000-short of a sell out, will stroll in.

As they do, our reporters will endeavour to bring you around the clock coverage.

The luxury of a toilet is something we all take for granted, even at a festival.

Yet the necessity wouldn't be possible without the team behind it all, including these two fellas.

These two locals, who would only give their names as Stats Montana and Rampz SG to the Chronicle, are arduously topping up the toilet paper stock in each of a set of about 50 toilets.

"We're just reloading toilet paper," said Mr Montana.

V Festival 2014: Top ten headgear choices

Traditionally a festival is all about the music, but for some, it's also about fashion.

Here we run you through the top 10 headgear choices, in descending order, spotted in the grounds in these early stages.

1. The Crayon Top

Four boys from the south of Wales, Carmarthenshire to be exact, have taken top spot by dressing up as four crayons, complete with the headgear. Ian Ayers said: "We always do fancy dress. Last year we were Smurfs but they ran out of blue in the shop."

2. The Mask

When Shane Daly, of Ipswich, awoke in his tent this morning, he had to question his sobriety when he saw 20 versions of himself staring back at him. In actual fact, it was his huge cohort of friends donning a mask with his face on it. The 29-year-old is currently on his stag-do before the big day on September 20. He is also dressed as a woman.

"This is nothing to do with me, I rolled up here and they dressed me up as a woman," he said.

"The masks also freaked me out when I first saw them. It's really weird seeing yourself."

3. The Cowboy

Two Wickford lads, 31-year-old "Lone Ranger" and 27-year-old "John Wayne", dress up every year, but say they are getting more attention than ever as cowboys complete with their inflatable horses.

"The reaction has been absolutely hilarious, everyone is loving it," said the Lone Ranger.

4. The Moroccan

Neil Willis, 55, from Woking, has a collection of about 20 hats at home. The Moroccan hat is one of them. "I'm only wearing it though because my wife stole my one."

5. The Sesame Street

Ryan Cilra, 22, has journeyed with his friends all the way from Malta for the festival. There are no half measures when you make such a venture, and so he's completed the experience with a toggle hat in the style of a Sesame Street character.

6. The Beer & Bodily Fluid Defence System

Topé Olatigbe, 18, of Chigwell, (not his real name) is only wearing his monkey hat, he says, as slight protection from any unwanted fluids thrown in the arena.

He said: "Basically when people are in the queues for so long they chuck their bladder producing fluids, or beer and cider. If it's warm it's bad, if it's cold, it's good."

7. The Garden Party

Valentina Varrazzo, also from Malta journeying especially for the festival, went for a more traditional look, a floral arrangement on her head.

8. The Classic

Zac Mitchell, 17, of Sudbury, is one of hundreds sporting the classic bandana.

9. The Birthday Boy

Zab Kisbee, 16, of Crowborough, is celebrating his 16th birthday. His sister gave him a hat in the shape of a cake, with candles.

10. Mrs Sensible

Chelsea Godden, 17, of Chatham, is thinking sensibly and protecting herself from possible sunburn. She is donning a classic sun hat.

DARREN Bartholomew is in charge of a 160-strong team of first aiders ready to give medical help to V Festival revellers.

Darren, the district manager for Essex, has been at every V Festival since it began 19 years ago.

"This is my 19th year and my fifth year in charge. We have about 160 volunteers at six different sites. We've got treatment centres behind each stage and a couple of field hospitals.

"I used to cover the Chelmsford spectacular before it got too big and then V Festival started. I even covered both events for the few years they both ran."

The number of injured people was steady last night with a few campers needing treatment for being worse for wear, while the only reveller needing treatment today was a woman with a blister.

"It's going to get a lot busier," laughed Darren.

The vicars and parishioners manning the God Tent at V Festival 2014 are gearing up to help tearful revellers through the weekend. The Parish Church of St. Mary in Widford, which sits mere metres from Hylands Park, has had a presence at the festival since the inaugural event in 1996.
Through the years they have offered people temporary tattoos and free tea and coffees, games of Jenga, but also a friendly chat. Organiser Lynette Hunwicks, 65, of Links Drive, Widford, said: "The response of the people that come is lovely. "We often have people come in tears. A festival creates problems, it creates its own problems for relationships, friendships, or people get lost. "They come in in a state and we sort them out, sit them down, and talk to them. Even if we can't solve the problem, if they can chat to friendly faces they can go out happy." The 10-strong God Tent team often see the same faces return each year. "They make friends here and they know us and say 'it's so nice to see you'," added Lynette. "We often ask them what's there favourite venue and they say this one. They say 'we can chill out enjoy ourselves and it doesn't cost us any money."

UPDATE: Police launch 'homicide investigation' into Tillbury docks death

$

Police have launched a 'homicide investigation' into the death of one of 35 suspected illegal immigrants found on a container at Tillbury docks this morning (August 16).

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, superintendent Trevor Rowe said that the stowaways, who were adults and children of both genders, were found in a container that arrived on a P&O ferry from Zeebrugge in Belgium at about 6.30am.

One man died and the others were taken to three hospitals.

Mr Rowe said: " All we know at the moment is that we believe them to come from the Indian subcontinent, but it is still early days.

"It is a homicide investigation from the police point of view at this time."

He added that the group was discovered after port staff heard 'screaming and banging' coming from the container.

He said: "This is a humanitarian issue and the welfare of these patients is a priority."

Mr Rowe said a "major incident" was declared at the port at 6.37am this morning.

He said: "Staff here at the port became aware of screaming and banging coming from a container coming from that particular ferry. As a result of that noise, staff were alerted and immediately breached the container to find 35 persons within that unit."

The group consisted of adults and children of both genders.

The Norstream was described as a "roll-on, roll-off" container ferry. Mr Rowe said: "It is a regular route here twice a day from Zeebrugge."

Mr Rowe added: "There are 50 containers on that ferry which we are continuing to obviously open and explore to make sure that there are no further incumbents within those containers, which is a concern."

So far almost 30 of the 50 containers on the ferry have been searched.

"That is the priority issue here at the moment - to make sure that there are no other containers on that particular ship that may or may not contain any persons," Mr Rowe said.

The unit in question was around the size routinely carried by a large heavy goods vehicle.

Mr Rowe said that once the door on the container was opened those inside were extracted "very quickly".

British authorities are understood to be liaising with their counterparts in Belgium as part of the investigation into the container's origins.

Mr Rowe said: "It is a homicide investigation... we will be looking to see where the origin and the gangs or whoever may (be) involved in this conspiracy to bring these people in this way over to this country. Clearly we need to try and bring them to justice."

Asked to clarify the nature of the homicide investigation, police said charges could include murder and manslaughter, although there was no suggestion anyone on the container was a suspect.

The superintendent added: "Nothing has been ruled out. We need to speak to the people in the container, where they have come from, what their motivation is and who's involved."

He said there was no indication of those on board suffering with a specific virus, but said tests were being carried out at hospital.

Public Health England has said it was not involved in the response to, investigation of or anything to do with the incident.

A spokesperson said: "If it was ebola, health care professionals are so alert at the moment to signs and symptoms that should there have been anyone who was showing symptoms we would have been notified immediately.

"I think we can be confident that we are not dealing with that."

Officials are set to interview the stowaways at a reception centre after they are released from hospital. Police said there are "language issues" and interpreters will be brought in.

Daniel Gore, from the East England ambulance service, said paramedics arrived on the scene within 11 minutes and immediately declared it a major incident.

He said: "In terms of the number of patients that we dealt with it is 35 patients in total. Unfortunately one of those patients was declared deceased at the scene, a male."

No information has been released about the ages of any of the stowaways or the relationship between them.

Two patients were taken to Basildon Hospital in a serious but not life-threatening condition, Mr Gore added, along with 16 other patients suffering from dehydration and hypothermia.

Nine patients were taken to the Royal London Whitechapel hospital and a further seven to Southend Hospital, all with the same ailments.

All of those found in the container were conscious when it was opened apart from the man who subsequently died.

Mr Gore said it was a "very difficult scene" for the first paramedics arriving at the incident.

He added: "In terms of our current and ongoing operation here we have got a number of resources still at the scene while the containers being removed from the vessel are being searched.

"We have set up an area adjacent to where that is taking place so any other further patients that are found will be immediately taken to that area, triaged accordingly and dealt with from there."

British authorities are liaising with their counterparts in Belgium.

Police have set up a "casualty bureau" hotline for anyone concerned about relatives. The numbers are 0800 0560944 or 0207 1580010 if dialling from outside the UK.

P&O Ferries told the Press Association the commercial vessel arrived from Zeebrugge at around 6am.

Natalie Hardy, from the firm, said the ship was scheduled to leave Belgium last night at 10pm and arrive at Tilbury today at 6am, and was carrying 64 containers, 72 trailers and five lorries and drivers.

Ms Hardy said: "They (port authorities) found 35 clandestines on a container in the ferry. They had been in there overnight, because the ship was an overnight freight ferry."

Ms Hardy said the container arrived on the quay at Zeebrugge yesterday at 6.56pm and was loaded on to the ferry at 8.07pm.

According to the website MarineTraffic.com, the 180m by 25.5m Norstream was built in 1999 and is registered in the Netherlands.

Yves Le Clef, harbour master at the Port of Zeebrugge, said he he had no information about the incident.

"This is the first I have heard," he said.

The port's website describes it as an "ideal location to serve the markets of continental Europe as well as the British Isles" and the "main gateway to Europe".

It says the port's total cargo traffic has tripled from 14 million tonnes in 1985 to 43.5 million in 2012
