The £15billion Crossrail link connecting Essex and Berkshire to central London and Heathrow will not be extended to Chelmsford.
Last month the project's sponsors Department for Transport (DfT) and Transport for London (TfL), instructed project engineers to extend the line west to Reading.
Previously the line had run from Shenfield to Maidenhead with other routes terminating in Abbey Wood and the UK's busiest airport.
But the Chronicle has learned there are no plans to replicate the extension on the north east section of the line.
A Crossrail spokesman said: "Decisions on the scope of the Crossrail route are decided by our joint sponsors Transport for London and the Department for Transport. They are not considering other extensions to the route."
