A 17-year-old boy from Chelmsford has been arrested this afternoon after a car was discovered crashed into a river in Boreham earlier today.
Police and fire crews were called to the River Chelmer in Church Road at around 10.40am.
Four fire engines, two police vehicles and the water support team of the Essex Fire and Rescue Service arrived, as it was believed that a person could be in the vehicle, but following a search by fire crews no-one was found inside.
Police officers at the scene said that the car was reported stolen.
A boy, 17 and from Chelmsford, was subsequently arrested.
A police spokesman said: "The registered owner of the Citroen Picasso, who is from Chelmsford, reported that the car had been taken without her consent when notified about its location by police officers.
"At 12pm police officers arrested a man on suspicion of taking without consent and other offences."
Police said it was unclear how long the car had been in the river for.
