Twanging string and old classics remixed in a distinctly original yet foot-tapping style summed up the ukulele band D'Ukes concert at the Colchester Arts Centre on Saturday night. From the more contemporary songs of One Day Like This from Elbow to rock classic Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple, A Message To You Rudy by The Specials and Echo Beach by Martha And The Muffins, the concert had something for everyone. Behind-the-head playing by one of the group of seven delighted the assembled crowd, who were only too happy to show their appreciation by wolf-whistling and clapping at every opportunity. As a ukulele first-timer, D'Ukes certainly had intrigued from the get-go. While the electric ukulele sounded akin to an electric guitar and the acoustics in the stunning-looking Arts Centre did not help ease this feeling, the acoustic versions that could still be heard more than make up for it. D'Ukes has me hooked – and if you enjoy foot-tapping music with a modern, 'uked' up twist, they may well reel you in too.
