Three people in Chelmsford were taken to hospital on the night of England's World Cup opener against Italy. A field tent was set up in the High Street on Saturday (June 14) before the game and into the early hours of Sunday and staffed by paramedics and volunteers from the East of England Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance. In total, 22 people were seen to by the team on the night - with the aim was to help reduce 999 calls and the pressure on Broomfield Hospital's A&E. Sandra Chick, assistant general manager for Mid-Essex, said: "We provided a similar resource in the high street on New Year's Eve and, due to the World Cup being screened in licensed premises and the expected increase in demand, we thought it would be a good idea to try it again. "I would like to thank all the staff involved including St John Ambulance volunteers who also assisted us in providing first aid and medical support." Depending on how far England goes in the World Cup stages, the tent may be used again for a night-time weekend fixture.
