Alternative bar and gig venue Asylum has closed a little over a year after opening due to "severe financial failures".
The nightspot in Viaduct Road, Chelmsford, shut this weekend prompting hoards of its loyal supporters to express their sadness on the club's Facebook page.
The bar, which was owned by musicians and couple Eddie and Denise Wood, wrote on the page yesterday (July 14): "We regret to inform you that we have had to close Asylum.
"Due to severe financial difficulties we are unable to continue in our efforts to sustain live music in Chelmsford."
Chris Ammon responded by writing: "Worst news ever! Live music venues are becoming hard to find!"
Dan Mailer wrote: "One of my favourite venues ever, such a massive shame. It will be missed sorely!"
The Woods opened the club with an inaugural gig featuring four live bands, attracting 160 revellers, in April 2013.
In December 2013 they rescued City of Chelmsford Mencap by offering them a venue for their monthly club nights.
The Golden Fleece landlord Brett Saunders said: "They had a great idea but a great idea and a great passion doesn't always make money. I feel desperately sorry for Eddie and Denise."
