WELLIE-wanging, wool-spinning and vintage crafts gave members of the City Girls WI a taste of 'the good life' this week at their July meet-up.
Nearly 200 women gathered together at River Farm, in Howe Street, on Monday evening to feast on hog roast from a local pig farmer, sample fresh veg from Rocket and Rhubarb, and take part in the rural tradition of 'wanging' their wellies, with the furthest throw reaching 15 metres.
"It went brilliantly, everything was excellent and we had amazing feedback," said Lisa Brazier, PR and media officer for the group.
"The actual National WI Federation is all about promoting the use of your local shops and high street so it doesn't disappear."
The event marks a further success for the City Girls, who can now boast the title of the largest WI in the county – with 315 members and a waiting list for anyone else wishing to join.
Lisa said: "I think women are just so busy every single day doing stuff for other people. They work, they nearly all have children and a husband, but this is something just for women.
"We live in such a throwaway society, we're consumed by consumerism but women just don't want to do that any more," added Lisa, who since joining the group's committee has taken up dress-making and is now a dab hand at using old pillows and material to create new outfits.
"Women also want to learn new skills and use those that they may have learned at school but never used."
If you would like to join the City Girls, you can e-mail new citygirlswi@live.com to be added to the waiting list.
