GREAT Baddow's Alex Dowsett surged to a gold medal in the time trial at the Commonwealth Games.
The 25-year-old looked to have dropped off the pace at one stage but pushed on in the final stages to knock Australian Rohan Dennis off the top spot and better the silver medal he won in the event in Delhi four years ago.
That time he was the one who lost first place with Scotland's David Millar taking gold, but this year Dowsett wasn.t to be denied.
He crossed the line in 47 minutes 41.78 seconds, 9.30 secs faster than Dennis and 14.04 secs faster than Welshman Geraint Thomas.
The win will be a huge boost to Dowsett who lost his British time trial champion title for the first time in four years earlier this month and then missed out on a place in Movistar's team for the Tour de France because of illness.
Dowsett said afterwards: "Nobody wanted that more than I did, after the disappointment of not being picked for the Tour de France and the silver in Delhi in 2010.
"I've been angry all this month, ever since I was a kid I have pulled something out of the bag when I have been really angry. It's pretty special that."
