CHELMSFORD Athletic Club's Jessica Judd came agonisingly close to a medal in the final of the women's 800m at the Commonwealth Games. The 19-year-old ran a good race and was third on the bend coming into the final straight before being overtaken by Lynsey Sharp, who sprinted through to win silver for Scotland. The race was won by world champion Eunice Sum of Kenya, who finished in 2mins 00.31 seconds. Judd crossed the line in 2.01.91. Earlier today Chelmsford's Rebecca Gallantree finished ninth in the women's 1m springboard diving final. There was also disappointment for the city's Daryl Selby as he and partner Sarah Kippax lost 2-0 to Hutton's Peter Barker and partner Alison water in the squash mixed doubles quarter-final. But he made up for it in the men's doubles quarter-finals, as Selby and James Willstrop beat New Zealand's Lance Beddoes and Paul Coll 2-1. The semi-final is tomorrow.
