HUNDREDS of people will line the banks of the Blackwater, on Saturday, when the Maldon Regatta returns for an afternoon of boating, crabbing and rubber duck racing.

Despite repairs to the Hythe Quay limiting some of the activities, the regatta will feature a variety of stalls in Promenade Park, by the ornamental lake, performances by the Shanty Singers and the famous rubber duck race at 3.30pm.

There will be a prize-giving ceremony at the Sail Loft Boatyard at 6pm, and evening music in the Queens Head, from the Junkyard Aliens band, from 8pm.

The Prom Park festivities start at noon, but the first race on the water begins at 8.30am.

Committee member Don Ramsay said: "There are about 20 stalls on the prom this year.

"They will be presenting various arts, crafts and homemade goods.

"There will also be activities throughout the day, such as the Maldon Blackwater Model Boat Club's race, on the small lake at 1pm, followed by the Shanty Singers."

While everyone is enjoying the stalls and numerous treats on offer, the boats will be racing from West Mersea to Osea Island, starting at 8.30am, and then making their way to the quay for the Parade of Sails at 2.45pm.

Mr Ramsay added: "Though the layout is different from previous years, it should still be a great day out."
