BRENTWOOD saw off the challenge of Ruislip with consummate ease on Saturday with a comprehensive win against opposition who are struggling this term.
Following a week's break Steve Kilington's side ran in a whopping nine tries with the scores spread well around the XI.
The Brentwood team which was badly beaten by Letchworth two weeks ago showed two changes – Tom King at second row and Adam Thomas at centre, replacing Charlie Chambers and Rob Hobbs. Declan Gillet moved from the wing to fly-half.
On a gloomy afternoon the hosts kicked off up the slope. Showing an appetite for the game, the home side tore into the opposition and a well coordinated backs and forwards move created room for winger Ryan Dee to touch down in the corner. First blood to Brentwood, and with a conversion from centre Dan Whitehead, the home side were 7-0 ahead within three minutes.
With the pack dominating play, Brentwood pressed up the slope aided by significant kicks to touch by Whitehead.
The home side were soon pounding Ruislip's line with continual pick and takes moves. Eventually scrum-half Luke Green dived over for the second try. Whitehead again converted to put Brentwood 14-0 ahead.
A third try came quickly after good work by full-back Aaron Stainer and flanker Chris Stewart resulted in an off-load to prop Anthony Sherwood. The conversion missed, Brentwood were ahead 19-0 after half an hour and were racing away. Ruislip then briefly came into the game scoring a breakaway unconverted try.
At half-time, the home side turned round to play down the slope with a 19-5 lead. Playing at speed, Brentwood had dominated the first-half with immaculate throwing to the line-out by prop Matt Northall .
Flanker Chris Stewart was having an exceptional game and Whitehead's line kicking was continually putting Brentwood into strong attacking positions, from which they dominated.
The second half started with a Declan Gillet score from strong diagonal running. This fourth try, converted by Whitehead, gave Brentwood a 26-5 lead and secured a bonus point.
With flanker James Metcalfe putting in his usual quota of close-quarter tackles, forwards Tom King and Anthony Sherwood were replaced by Rob Hobbs and Jack Springall.
The home side continued to apply pressure in all parts of the park with hooker Terry Snooks held up over the line. With Ben Amato replacing Metcalfe, Brentwood scored their fifth try when number eight John Beith went over from close range.
This unconverted try put the home side ahead by 31-5. A sixth try came quickly when Gillet kicked downfield, gathered the ball and sped over the line. With Whitehead now off the field, Stanier missed the conversion.
With regular substitutions taking place under this season's new rules, Beith off-loaded to Jack Springall within Ruislip's 22 for Brentwood's seventh try. Stanier converted for 43-5.
Well into the fourth quarter, Brentwood took advantage of well beaten opponents. Ben Amato, back after a long recovery from a knee injury, chipped deftly over the Ruislip defence before touching down. Finally, Brentwood's ninth try came from the speedy winger, Ryan Dee, who zipped in from forty metres exposing a tired but gallant Ruislip defence.
Victory at 53-5 was total with the Brentwood side showing renewed energy. Playing in style with bags of pace, they delighted the home supporters. The hard work that had been done in recent training sessions was obvious.
The Brentwood under-seven minis won against Harwich and Maldon on Sunday.
