A 29-year-old man is still being quizzed by police over the suspected murder of a Chelmsford man found dead in accommodation for the homeless.

The dead man was found at about 8.30am this morning (Tuesday, September 30) in his first floor flat above Sanctus café, a refuge for the homeless and vulnerable, in Broomfield Road.

The victim, who would have celebrated his 40th birthday this Saturday, was found with multiple stab wounds.

Neighbouring shopkeepers in Broomfield Road expressed their shock today as officers continued to man a cordoned off section of Railway Street and the city council West End car park.

"I was very surprised and very shocked when I found out what had happened," said Gulam Mustafa, who is opening up Sahara Grill restaurant with his father next door to Sanctus.

"Just really shocked and surprised. We haven't found any problems before at Santus before during the time we've been here, it's quite a nice place."

A worker at Broomfield Opticians, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "It's horrible that it has happened but I'm sure anyone would think the same.

"They're people in need in Sanctus and they don't need to have this sort of trouble."

Anyone with information should contact Essex Police on 101.
