WITHAM Town's winning run came to an end after Ryman Premier leaders Maidstone United beat them 3-1. Frannie Collin had put the Stones into the lead before Lee Townrow equalised just before half-time. But Collin's second-half penalty and a Jay May header sealed the three points to leave Witham 18th in the league. Witham got the ball down well early and settled into the game much quicker than the Stones. The first opportunity fell to the home side in the 12th minute when James Stevens played a lovely sweeping ball out to Tom Wraight. He cut outside the right-back Jamie Coyle, but Stones' keeper Lee Worgan saved his shot low to his right. Maidstone got themselves into the game and gradually saw more of the ball. Their first big chance came in the 31st minute when Matt Bodkin played it out to Frannie Collin on the right wing. The striker then whipped in a cross across the floor but Alex Flisher was only able to guide it wide. But after not causing much threat, Maidstone grabbed the lead in the 41st minute through Collin. Jack Parkinson fed the striker on the edge of the box who turned and fired in a shot past Guest into the bottom corner. But the lead would last just two minutes after Maidstone failed to deal with a ball into the box. Worgan came out to punch but only put it into the path of Ryan Blackman. He fired in a shot that Lee Townrow cheekily back-heeled to divert past Worgan and make it 1-1. Maidstone came out in the second half strongly, with Guest being forced into a fantastic early save. Flisher picked up the ball in the six-yard box and poked the ball towards goal. The Witham keeper got down brilliantly to his right and held on to the ball with Stones players bearing down on him. Guest then made another great save in the 59th minute, this time from Sonny Miles. A long throw from Flisher found the centre-back on the six-yard box, who guided it towards goal. But Guest did well again to get down to his left and hold on to the ball. Witham then had a big penalty shout turned down when Lewis Godbold appeared to be brought down in the box. The whole team appealed, including the bench, but referee Nigel Phillips waved it away. Flisher then missed a golden opportunity to put the Stones in the lead. Guest rushed out to clear a ball over the top, but he missed it and took out John Watson. Flisher sprinted towards goal with three Maidstone players in support, but he decided to shoot, which Conor Mead did brilliantly to deflect wide. But from the subsequent corner the visitors were awarded a penalty. The ball came in to Flisher and seemed to be tripped in the box, with the referee pointing to the spot. Collin stepped up and calmly sent Guest the wrong way to regain the lead. Maidstone then made it three and effectively put the game to bed. Collin spread the ball wide right to Bodkin, who then sent in a lovely ball into the middle. Substitute May was left unmarked and headed past a helpless Guest.
