Car tax discs have been consgned to history after 93 years following changes to the UK car tax system.

But those attempting to log on to renew their discs online have been experiencing delays, due to an "unprecedented level of demand" according to the DVLA.

An additional 30,000 people visited the site compared to the same day last year.

People who need to renew their tax urgently are advised to do so at a Post Office instead.

The paper discs will no longer have to be displayed although the remaining months on the disc will still count and the DVLA will send motorists reminders when their current tax is due to expire.

The change will now enable motorists to pay for their car tax through Direct Debit in the form of monthly, 6-monthly or annual payments.
