A PUBLIC open space described as Billericay's green lung has been officially dedicated as a Queen Elizabeth II field – protecting it from any development in the foreseeable future.
The ceremony, which took place earlier this month, was the culmination of a long-running campaign by residents and local authorities to safeguard Sun Corner – which is at the junction of High Street and London Road – from developers.
The green space, which locals have used for sport and leisure for at least 45 years, is owned by Essex County Council but is currently being leased to Basildon Borough Council.
Lord Petre, the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, unveiled a plaque during the ceremony.
Councillor Kevin Blake, the borough council's cabinet member for leisure and arts, said: "I am delighted that Sun Corner has been recognised with QE2 status and it was a pleasure to attend the dedication ceremony to celebrate all of the hard work that everyone involved has put in.
"This site is an important and well-used amenity for local people, and provides an important green area within the central part of Billericay."
Councillor Kay Twitchen, chairman of the county council, said: "I'm very proud and pleased that after so many years of discussion we have been able to do something so great for Billericay, which people will be able to enjoy for generations to come.
"This is a brilliant initiative and a wonderful example of joint working between the three different councils involved.
"It really is something to celebrate."
Councillor John Buchanan, chairman of Billericay Town Council, said: "Billericay Town Council was pleased to round off the celebrations of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year by joining with Essex County Council and Basildon Borough Council in the dedication of Sun Corner as a Queen Elizabeth II Field, which means it is protected from any possible development for the foreseeable future."
