Eager readers at Bupa's Hutton Village Nursing Home, Brentwood will be hosting a variety of special events in celebration of National Storytelling Week, January 26 to February 2.
During a week of persistent page turning, this annual event encourages the community to get involved with creative storytelling and sharing, whilst increasing awareness of its benefits.
The care home in Hutton Village has invited members of the community along to a story telling event on Monday, January 28.
Home manager, Christine Jennings, said: "Storytelling is one of the most traditional forms of enjoyment for people of all ages. It allows our residents to liberate their imaginations and be transported to other worlds without even having to leave the comfort of their armchairs.
"We are looking forward to welcoming family members and members of the local community along - we really want as many people as possible to join us in celebrating this wonderful form of entertainment."
The Reader Organisation, a charity which since 2006 has been promoting the links between reading and wellbeing in older people, is supporting Bupa care homes on this yearly project.
Emma Gibbons, older people's project manager from the charity, said: "Sharing stories and reading out loud is a great way for older people to keep their minds active and help rekindle memories. These events not only allow those who enjoy a good read to take part, but those who like to listen or contribute personal tales – it's proven to be a really enjoyable get together in the past and we have no doubt that this year will be the same."
Across the UK over 300 Bupa care homes are taking part in National Storytelling Week, organised by The Society for Storytelling and is now in its thirteenth year.
