Campaigners who were told more evidence was needed to warrant a new pedestrian crossing built across the Ongar Road are astonished the subject would not be discussed fully at Monday's highways meeting.

Every day scores of young children and their parents can be seen making a dash through speeding traffic across Ongar Road as they make their way to and from Bentley St Paul's C of E Primary School.

Campaigners, including Lisa Barrett, were told to collect more evidence that a crossing was needed at the last meeting in November, following the decision that it would not go ahead this financial year.

Ms Barrett said was disappointed the item would not be discussed fully on January 28.

"We have lots more people wanting to tell the panel why we need it. I don't know what else they need. We are worried that the council are just fobbing us off," she said.

Highways panel chairman Keith Parker, said it was unlikely it would be discussed in full but officers would be available at the end of the meeting to take evidence from other parties.

Councillor Parker said: "The fact is the item is not at top of the highways department's list of priority. It doesn't follow the criteria.

"But the members are trying their utmost to get it done.

"Highway cabinet member Derrick Louis has said prove it that you need it and full marks to Lisa Barrett, that is what she has been doing.

We have earmarked £250,000 for the project.

"But if the project is still in obeyance, I will call another meeting to use that £250,000.

"If Ashwells Road doesn't go ahead then we have to make sure we have other projects to spend it on, but to earmark £250,000 for next year.

"I don't people accusing me of losing £250,000 for the borough."
