Kiddi Caru Colchester has started the year in good health, after receiving a Gold Healthy Eating Award from Essex Healthy Life.
The Essex Healthy Life Healthy Eating Awards are run by the Essex Food Liaison Group, which is made up of fourteen of Essex Council's Environmental Health Departments. The Gold award is presented to a commercial organisation that has made a clear effort to offer healthy options on its menu.
To win the Gold award a business has to demonstrate that it is committed to keeping levels of saturated fat, sugar and salts in food it serves to a minimum, making fruit and vegetables readily available and making starchy foods the main part of most meals. In addition Kiddi Caru Colchester demonstrated that at least 50% of the food it serves can be described as healthy eating and met a series of requirements, which included things like removing fat from meat.
Jennie Gregory, Nursery Manager, said: "We understand that it is vital to provide healthy and nutritious food to the children in our care and are committed to using both healthier ingredients in the meals we serve, which are all cooked by our chef on site, and also healthier cooking methods. We have also received a 5 rating for Food Hygiene so our chef is absolutely delighted with this latest achievement!"
