CARL PENTNEY says he's not too sure what happened at the end of the season at Chelmsford City, but he's delighted to have signed for Braintree Town.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper was named the fans' player of the year in a season where the Clarets battled against relegation from the Conference South, but his time at City seemed to fizzle out.
He played in a couple of friendlies for the Iron before being announced as a Braintree player this week.
"It was a strange one, I'm not really sure what happened," said Pentney. "Everything winds down at the end of the season and people go on holiday but nothing seemed to happen.
"I asked Alan [Devonshire, Braintree's manager] if I could train with them and it went from there.
"I was supporters' player of the year. It was a disappointing season for the club, but personally it was great to come away with the fans' award, it meant a lot.
"It's always nice to be recognised by the fans."
Devonshire revealed this week that the former Colchester United keeper will act as back-up for Nick Hamann, with Nathan McDonald out on loan at Enfield Town.
"It's a good challenge," said Pentney on stepping up a division to the Conference Premier. "Nick did very well last season, but I'm just going to keep my head down and work as hard as I can for Braintree.
"Goalkeepers like to push each other on, so we'll see what happens."
