I AM writing to draw your attention to the very great risk involved in providing the pedestrian crossings in Van Dieman's Lane, Chelmsford, near the Army and Navy roundabout.
Although some means of crossing the road is definitely required the danger to those trying to cross is most severe.
On four occasions recently my friend has nearly been run over by fast-moving traffic coming off the Army and Navy Roundabout and proceeding up Princes Avenue.
This is despite the pedestrian traffic lights showing red and her being in the middle of the road on the crossing.
Traffic coming off that roundabout fast simply ignores the signs.
Please can the authorities give more consideration to pedestrians in future planning and ensure that never should surface crossings be placed so close to roundabouts.
Perhaps the best alternative is underpasses for pedestrians.
If the cost is prohibitive then consideration should be given to road tolls – to pay for safety measures in the city and slow traffic on entering it.
I believe legislation is in place to allow councils to do this.
My friend is not the only person who has had a near-death experience crossing near Van Dieman's Lane. I have seen cars swerving to avoid pedestrians on the crossing near the roundabout at Fortinbras Way up the road.
